The Republican party is starting to reap what they have sewn. Unfortunately the whole country is paying the price.

The groundwork for today's dysfunction was strategically set up by Congressman Newt Gingrich in order for the Republican party to come to dominate American politics. Mr. Gingrich is a highly intelligent person who did not understand what the results of what he was doing were going to be. When he gained unofficial leadership in the party he handed down the order to all Republican legislators to go home on weekends, rally their supporters and never, never have anything to do with Democrats any more. His strategy was to groom the working class by telling them they had the freedom and power to reshape America, how wonderful they are and how much they needed firearms to achieve this. He convinced them how the government was taking everything from them and giving it to lazy people. That they needed to take government back to get back their rights. Meanwhile the Democrats were seeking justice for a relatively small minority of people who felt marginalized by the system. This had zero impact at showing leadership and convincing citizens how the Democrats had the better path to empowering the working person.

This political stance carried on successfully for about 25 years until around 2010. Around that time the people being groomed by Republicans started feeling the power of freedom and started ignoring the party. A large portion of the citizens of America felt they were free so there was no need to pay attention to law except where it was in their favor. They felt they could do whatever they wanted without consequence because the Republicans told them so. The Republicans, in order to wipe out any trace of the Democratic party, have unwittingly created an anarchy and are unable to control it any more. We are all suffering the consequence of this hubris and waiting and hoping to see if this can be reversed and settle back down to being Americans again. If we can it is going to take 25 to 50 years. Be patient and work hard.

I think you make some interesting points about Gingrich's role in the history of our situation. But i think the fact that the Democratic Party is not making any attempt to support the working class has to also be a factor in our situation. The Democrats have solid control of California and New York, but there is no Medicare-for-All in either state. That's the one program that would benefit the vast majority of people in nearly all classes except the very top (and the public health benefits would help them too). And there are the endless wars, including the war against Libya in 2011 and the brother's war in the Ukraine in 2014, that happened under a Democratic watch. And there's the student loan disaster---at best Senator Schumer is talking about a limited forgiveness, which will probably be paid for by the taxpayer: instead, the loans should be declared worthless paper and the speculators who bought student loans for pennies on the dollar should get a hair cut. But if all the Democrats can do is scold the working class for their supposed privilege, then they, and we, will be in trouble.

Democrats are timid about helping the working class because they feel the need to satisfy big money to hold on to their jobs. Unfortunately legislators job is to serve their constituents, not hold on to the job. A difference that is not seen by many of them. Bernie Sanders, though too old for the office, went about it properly by going directly to workers.

Everything today comes down to what monetary value is this to me? We will never have a functioning government until a value for human dignity and respect is thrown into the mix.
