Theory versus hypothesis

Why do news medias consistently call hypotheses theories when the scientific method has not proven a hypothesis to be an accepted theory?

Because most modern day media sources are not really interested in reporting on the facts...

The same reason people use “theory” to mean “opinion”, when what a theory means is the account that best explains all the facts, and so it is the most fact-constrained position.
