Well, most writers of speculative sci-fi are influenced by what is happening around them or see is happening in other countries. The good and the bad, this is why we got so many stories that we love and still read, like Starship Trooper, War of the Worlds, 1984, Things to Come, Frankenstein, Dune, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, Metropolis, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Man in the High Castle, Thre Player Piano, etc...
So many great works that have influenced our scientists and engineers.
