Is Democratic Socialism an oxymoron? If so are there any real life examples of it?

Regular socialism: A dictator takes your stuff.
Democratic socialism. A mob votes to take your stuff.

Oxy or otherwise, it's moronic. Flies smack dab in the face of reality. There's no DS that can articulate a way to keep their socialism democratic. It has to eventually degrade into totalitarianism as the Wokestapo it empowers curtail ever more rights of the one entity they refuse to acknowledge -- the individual. DS wants to empower government to nanny society and government power will not curtail itself. Sooner or later there will be purges of undesirables and impure. Marxists keep changing their labels and sales pitches, but they are still peddling the same old magical visionary utopian elixir. Just drink the Kool-Aid and cancers will fall off while your hair grows back over that bald spot. You'll look beautiful when they blindfold you and line you up against the trench and put a bullet in the back of your head.

I believe that all (or at least the majority) of the Communist and Socialist regimes around the world were "democratic", i.e. they allowed (mandated) voting and held elections. They were not actually valid, as there was usually only one party, one candidate, etc, and usually unanimous. This is not unique to these groups, many non-marxist dictators use the same tactic.

I've often wondered about the practicalities of "democratic" socialism ... how often are we all going to vote on:

  • how much gas costs
  • how many Big Macs should McDonalds order this week
  • exact size the next iPhone should be
  • how often to run Amtrak trains
  • how many t-shirts Walmart should stock
    etc,
    etc,
    etc...... ad infinitem

Do people like AOC really think it's possible to vote on how to run every industry?

And why on earth do they think that having over 300 million Americans voting on every aspect of every industry would result in better production and distribution than we have now? Haven't they heard the saying about "too many cooks"?

Right on. Capitalism already has that voting built in. It's called the dollar here in this country, and each one spent is a vote for a product. Businesses that accumulate enough votes to pay their expenses and improve their products make more of them and those that don't go out of business and quit making products. You get what you want and everyone has a say in the process. Besides, deferring the details of the decision-making to only the end product means you don't have to know the intracies of economics and business and research scads of mind-numbing details to make an informed decision. You only need to know if the product will do what you want it to do and if it's available at a price you are willing to pay.

Agreed .... the 'invisible hand' is a beautiful, beautiful thing.

I think a lot of the confusion comes from people mislabeling the US as a “democracy.” We absolutely are not a democracy.

That said, Venezuela is a good example of democratic socialism. The people elected Hugo Chavez democratically to elicit socialist principles to their country.

Yep. And Weimar Germany elected the National Socialist Workers' Party that ended up demolishing the republic in favor of a reich.

Not only that. I remember the campaign. It was all about free stuff.

The Nordic countries they use to compare the US to, are not only free market (not socialists) but they don't need a giant defense budget like the US does. They are protected by their neighbors. Not a good comparison at all.

All socialism starts democratic sure doesn't end that way.

Sounds an awful lot like the system the Nazi government imposed on the population of Germany. Oxymoronic or not we shouldn’t try that crap in the U.S.

There aren't any examples that really work . Everyone points to Sweden , but their work fare system doesn't really fit the Communist aspirations of the Leftist appetites . West Germany took a run at it before the Berlin Wall came down . That doesn't quite meet the nanny state test , either . I can't think of any others that aren't military dictatorships masquerading as democracies . The drug cartels pretty much run the Latin American side of the pond .
