The following was a post I did refuting a gun control group's posts on some other site.

Over the years one of the main arguments I hear from the gun control crowd is that the part of the Second Amendment where it says "well regulated" in regards to militias is proof that the 2A is more or less a collective right as opposed to an individual right to own firearms, which in turn would grant the Government the power to regulate private gun ownership. The question there is, what exactly does the expression "well regulated" really mean, and based on its definition we could then reasonably conclude one way or the other if such a claim is true? In short, well regulated, in terms of definitions back in the 1700s when the US Constitution was drafted and that of which said definitions though now considered archaic expressions but would still hold the same meaning(s), well regulated does not mean what most think it means.

Proper context is important, and the phrase well regulated back then (and still applies today though the expression is archaic) simply meant to be in working and functional order, and not regulated with laws by any governing body. The following three sources I'll be linking to below are considered independent/neutral sources, and all three of them go into good detail explaining what the Founders had in mind when it came to well regulated (well equipped and functioning) militias, and that the term militia back then meant every able-bodied man and not government-regulated militias of the sort.-

Even progressive leftwing CNN's "experts" agree that at the time of the American Revolutionary War, militias were groups of able-bodied men who protected their towns and colonies and eventually states. They also agree that the word regulation back then does not mean what it commonly means today, and even though if a word or phrase is now considered archaic, the definition(s) would still be the same. When it came to the part explaining what to keep and bear arms means, CNN had to tiptoe around that part and did not address the definition of that directly. Gee whiz, I wonder why? Their "experts" also did not directly address the shall not be infringed part either. Regardless, at least they told the truth on the militias and well regulated parts.-

Last source, Reason.com's take on the matter, a libertarian source-

So there you have it, a variety of sources from independent, to progressive left, to libertarian/right of center all virtually saying the same thing when it comes to the actual meaning of the word militia and the phrase well regulated at the time the Constitution was drafted, and the intended definitions of those still apply to this day. Why do you suppose the gun control crowd wants to just simply do away with the 2A? Because they know the 2A is indeed an individual right and there's nothing legally they could do about it... except amend the Constitution and axe the 2A. Not hard to realize that for what it truly is.

If the purpose of having an armed citizenry to stand up militias against possible tyranny and oppose a standing army that would promote that tyranny through force, how can those militias be 'regulated' by the same government that 'regulates' the army that intends to oppress the people (the militia)? That in short is the argument the gun control crowd uses when it comes to defining the word regulate, and when you take into consideration that the whole idea behind the 2A was to be a safeguard against any form of tyranny, their argument makes zero rational sense that the Government gets to regulate an individual right when the very thing the Founding Fathers were concerned about was a Government that abused its power.

I know what was mentioned above won't sit well with some folks, but that's reality though based on historical context and not just merely opinion or wishful thinking. I also know that even after learning the truth about what the phrase well regulated really means in the 2A there will still be some out there who will choose dishonesty whenever the topic comes up and still try to claim that means for the Government/State to step in and regulate with laws, because those personal agendas will somehow make their way to the forefront and damned be the facts. Then again, the gun control movement as a whole is emotionally-charged, so no shocker on that much.

Everything anyone ever needs to know about proper gun control I learned first as a Boy Scout and later in Boot Camp.

  1. Every firearm is assumed to be loaded until you personally check the chamber.
  2. Never point a firearm at anything you do not want to destroy.
  3. Keep your finger away from the trigger until you are ready to fire.
  4. Always be certain your target has a solid backstop to keep the bullet from going where you do not want it to go.
  5. Maintain proper sight alignment and sight picture until the weapon discharges.
  6. Breathe, Relax, Aim, take up the Slack and Squeeze, don't pull, the trigger (BRASS).
  7. When finished shooting, remove the magazine, cycle the action and check the chamber to ensure the firearm is no longer loaded.
  8. Return the selector switch to the safe position when not shooting.

Did I miss any important "gun control" issues, @SpikeTalon?

The founding fathers believed that all rights come from the Creator, not the government. The entire bill of rights was intended to limit the government, not “creating rights through the government”. The 2nd amendment isn’t the source of the right to keep an bear arms, it is a clear warning to the government that they have zero authority to restrict that right.

Bingo. Every human has a right to protect their life -- regardless of what religion they follow, even if none at all.
This is the rebuttal to every attempt/rationalization of gun restriction. Even in response to some "down the nose" explanation by a "more civilized" European trying to explain things to a primitive American. Everyone, even that sex slave you bought in Ukraine during your last visit has the right to defend herself -- so don't sleep lightly.
