Is it time to stop using the word "Racist"? That is, if the word has so many different meanings depending on the context, speaker/author's demographic or the political view of the audience, does using such an ambiguous word create more harm than good? Either way, how can we become more clear?

The left has unfortunately succeeded making what once was a general and common definition within our cultural language, into a toxic weapon.

No. They really haven’t but they’ve succeeded in making lots of people “think” so.
Keep using all words and terms correctly and don’t let them get inside your head.

@Bay0Wulf oh I know what you mean, and personally agree with you..I guess what I was suggesting is that it appears to be affecting a substantial portion of the country...uhgg

I say keep using it. They're shooting themselves in the foot with it. You're not going to get rid of ambiguity - they'll just come up with something else. Let them air their dirty laundry.

If they want to froth themselves up to getting stomped upon, by all means.

All verbal and sign language communications should be banned. Also ban any further books, movies or communications at all. Then start burning or destroying all past communications. I think everyone will be in a safe place. God bless the left and their genius.🤮

@Don_Provolone ok, I can go with that, although they are great comedic relief from serious discussions.

@Don_Provolone very true, they are so convinced the world is flat that they know they can convince you they know what they are talking about. It's almost like watching a Democratic debate.

No. The use of the word defines the person using it.

Should be. BAnned as a hate word just like the dreaded "N" word

dnarc Level 5 July 25, 2019

Yeah, I know what you mean. Lots of racists just come right out and say it in the open just like it was no big thing. NASCAR. Just like that. Next thing you know they're going to ban DRAG Racing because it offends trannies or something. But I think they all use manual trannies anyway so it might not be a problem.

Words are an expression of a thought. Spoken or written, doesn't matter. You can't think without words and vice versa. Therefore censorship is an attack on your ability to think. It makes you a puppet! Not even a slave, a fucking puppet!!!

That would be racist against English speaking non-racists and all "white females"

1

Nope. It's time to take it upon ourselves to be more resilient when implicated by the word and recognize all of the complex meanings of the word.

Sure, like bigot. Or bigotry. Bigoted... Bigotting. Bigotist. Bigoteer. Bigotalia. Bigoteur. Bigotuse. Bigotti.

@jwhitten "...Bigoteur. Bigotuse. Bigotti." Biscotti!! I have to get me some of that!

1

I don't worry about it, it's the liberals word...they can't compete one complete sentence without the word racist in it.

Dmwils Level 7 July 25, 2019

Them Southern Democrats are really racists. They're always going on about the N-word and stuff. But as hard as I try, I still can't figure out what's wrong with saying NASCAR??

Isn’t this community against censorship and restricting free speech?

Momo Level 3 July 25, 2019

They were talking about banning it in society...

Yes, irony is an extra bonus 🙂

@Dmwils That's what I am talking about... Isn't this community against censorship and restricting free speech, in society?

@Dmwils Do you think banning words you don't like, on a societal level, is all right?

@Don_Provolone Yes. I am not confused about that. Don’t most fans and people commenting here believe in free speech?

@Momo >> That's what I am talking about... Isn't this community against censorship and restricting free speech, in society?

But just to clarify, we can still TALK about Censorship though, right??

@jwhitten right-o. Since we are literally talking about censorship right now, I’d answer ‘yes’ to your question. 😉

@jwhitten that’s actually a good topic to discuss. What, if anything, should be censored?

@Momo We could censor censorship...

@Don_Provolone why wouldn’t it? Ideas can start small and gain traction. That is the point of discussing them on sites like these. It is dim and shortsighted to presume you know otherwise.

I hate it when people abuse the word and call someone racist because they can’t rebuttal an argument, but that doesn’t mean racism is still a major threat in society

'Anti-semitic' is a lot more specific. Why is there a specific term for racism against Jews?

I think we've got SOOooo many new groups of precious fragile people that racism is just one of too many things for people to bleat about. Harden up, peeps - life is hard, very hard. If you choose to make it harder for yourself by inventing a new race, gender, affliction or whatever to stand out from the maddening crowd, then you'll just have to suck it up as the price of being "special". If you can't handle it, then just merge back into the crowd with the rest of the unexeptional unwashed masses.

0

It definitely depends on context, as the term racist is being thrown out there as a blanket comeback instead of discussing a point. Personally, I enjoy doing my homework and researching topics beforehand; but it appears most would rather listen to respond. If you point out something they don’t like or presumably agree with, they’ll pull the racist card or my personal favourite, victim points. I thought it was all a joke; “people aren’t really that self absorbed...?” My brother introduced me to some UTube videos where, yes, this seems to be a trend.
I don’t think myself a racist, life isn’t a competition, nobody wins from tearing others down.

0

Keep using it but use it where ever it applies. The word "racist" today actually means "white racist" because of the "liberal" double standard that only whites can be racist when it is the blacks who are the most virulent, violent racists against whites.

0

Calling someone ‘Racist’ is now used as a form of intimidation being applied by particular sections of the community to anyone whose view varies from their own. In the current climate of political correctness and so called diversity it is viewed by such people as the ultimate insult. It also implies that your opinion or action is driven by ‘racism’ regardless of what your actual motives may be. The fact that the term is used by bigots who cannot see the irony in their comments displays the level of their stupidity.
Banning the word is not practicable but even if it was it would serve little purpose because some other term would be equally misused to replace it.

0

The leftists have no replacement word to try and cause a defensive reaction from those they view as their enemies. So don't look for an end to its use anytime soon. That being said don't tell them we've become desensitized to it and are pretty much ignoring them.

0

I do my best to ignore any references to "race". I lean more toward the idea of it being a social construct and having little real meaning. It can be a challenge to do this, but I've found it worth the effort.

0

No, for me the goal is not to let the leftists win but to attempt to reclaim language. To let them have certain terms to the point where we consider dispensing with them altogether is essentially giving the field to them.

0

It’s definitely lost it’s meaning the left are radical being racist and they can’t even see it. I don’t think I’m conservative but I sure always had their beliefs apart from religious beliefs.

Short of yelling FIRE in a theater, I thought FREE SPEECH was part of the Constitution.
But Racist is about the same as a Canadian saying AY, now days. It carries no weight!!
Lots of replies re: a single word. What does that tell you?????
