What is common law?

Is anyone familiar with the term posse comitatus?

I saved a quote from an opinion offered in a work that is no longer available to me, as my efforts fail to find it again with the current search engines loaded on my computer.

“Even the western films have done a good job of representing the common law practice: when the town bank is robbed and the sheriff dashes into the bar and announces he is forming a posse, everyone who can ride and tote a gun is expected to join up—and the posse races out of town chasing the villains! That is posse comitatus, US style.”

The work from which that quote is taken makes an effort to distinguish the difference between the common law practice, and the Statute known by the same name.

The practice is for a common law sheriff in a common law county to assemble a large enough force taken from the local population capable of overpowering a large force threatening life, liberty, property, the pursuit of happiness, and the means to defend all in that common law county.

If orders were given to local Law Enforcement Officers who Obey such Orders Without Question, for them to "Stand Down," and they OBEY and they wait for their next Orders to be Obeyed Without Question, then that happens that way in that place at that time.

If someone claims to order a common law sheriff to "Stand Down" in the face of large angry mobs of rioters, the common law sheriff can then identify a clear and present danger to life, liberty, property, the pursuit of happiness, and the means to defend all in that common law county. The one issuing the "Stand Down" order would be the clear and present danger aiding and abetting, if not funding and directing that Angry Mob of Rioters.

At the disposal of a common law sheriff, in a common law county, are any friendly forces of any kind, not limited to so-called civilians, the militia, the police, the military, or even secret services.

The threat warrants the level of defensive forces required to defend life, liberty, property, the pursuit of happiness, and the means to defend all in common law processes such as posse comitatus.

People could jerk their knee when I report this information that is factually based and provable beyond reasonable doubt to anyone in command of reason. People could jerk their knee on reaction to the information, and they could imagine that it is me alone who has been watching too many Hollywood Movies, and then that knee jerking individual can go back to whatever they were doing before that jerking of that knee.
