Not sure how to articulate what I want to communicate, but seeing trans related posts from JK Rowling has got me thinking about how the trans world is heading down the wrong path.

When I started to transition in the 90's trans conversations were happening within the trans community. Pretty much the same issues as we see today but they were done among trans people. Now the trans community has moved beyond private forums and have publicized these private issues about transitioning, passing/stealth, what it means to be trans blah blah blah and moved the discussion to the general public.

The public, like JK Rowling, should have nothing to say on this issue. In the normal world people don't do a Crocodile Dundee crotch grab to figure out how to communicate with you. But for some reason the trans community has made all of our issues, dirty laundry and inside politics available for public consumption.

No one passes on day one of their transition and you do go through many awkward and humiliating social interactions. These should be learning moments, but instead trans activists have established the trans brand around them and made them a permanent characteristic about being trans. Which is extra weird considering the suffix is trans.

So we live in a world where instead of transitioning there is just a place on the gender spectrum and instead of learning from awkward moments the public is being redefined. The general non trans public is being forced to transition to this spectrum as cis and not normal or not just a man or just a woman.

Transition is a temporary state and should never be the end goal. The public, like JK Rowling, shouldn't be forced to see their lives through our prism. No one runs a chromosome test before they interact with another human being. Our interactions are based on what we see, hear and feel so whatever theory to trans you believe in is actually irrelevant to how we communicate with each other.

Decades down the line being trans should be a footnote in your life story and not the main attraction.

Hope that sort of makes some sense.

I agree. I started transition in the 80's. That first year was HELL. A truly STEEP learning curve. Don't wish it on anyone, but think it's necessary step in life.

I agree also on 'trans-ition', being a temporary state. I call myself a woman. Not a transwoman. Not a transgender. I don't even like noting I am 'post-op' but do so in discussions like this to clarify.

"These should be learning moments, but instead trans activists have established the trans brand around them and made them a permanent characteristic about being trans. "Pretty much the same issues as we see today but they were done among trans people." FUCKING PREACH

You said: "The public, like JK Rowling, should have nothing to say on this issue."

Wrong. When one's kids are subjected to it in school, and girls have to share locker rooms with boys, and they are told not to have any expectations of bodily privacy, and these girls aren't old enough to vote yet - then yeah, the public has every right to have a say.

ya i think the public only has a say because it does affect us in PUBLIC areas where we come together.

Hey, I like the way you put this! You make a lot of good points and I can see where you're coming from.

I am a trans man. I had a "social transition" about 12 years ago and only began a "medical transition" about 2 years ago. My personal policy has always been that my gender identity is about ME, not anybody else. I was never offended if someone "misgendered" me as female because, hell, how are they supposed to know my internal identity? They were just going off physical markers. That never bothered me, honestly.

When I made a "medical transition" 2 years ago, I realized that everyone around me was suddenly super self-aware of what pronouns they used, etc. I was actually surprised by that because nobody cared before and I certainly didn't care. So, I spent some time reassuring people around me that I do not care about what pronoun they call me because my identity and my "transition" are about my own personal feelings, not about what other people think.

I've never really been part of the "transgender community," (I had no trans friends, did not partake in social media, etc) so my mentality about my own gender was probably different than it could have been, if I had been in an echo chamber.

Your point of view as a person who transitioned in the 90's is very interesting to me! Thanks for posting!

Hmm... interesting perspective... but the problem I feel is that its presenting the general public as an unchanging monolith. I mean I understand all too well the meaning of hegemony but its not as if hegemonic changes are nonexistent and I feel this is partly because of the general public starting to accept us and the push to marginalise people less, especially in younger spaces. (in large part due to the young "cis" or "non-trans" population wanting change, as well as the scientific community wanting to find out the actual truth about sex and gender).

However I do agree there was and is a push amongst the various anti-oppression movements to air our dirty laundry and that is presented as a path to freedom. And it has long been critisised that that alone is not enough. Dirty laundry when aired is still dirty laundry... I you're gonna ask us to air it then you might as well take responsibility and help us wash it while you're here.

But I will agree that the perspective (at least this well presented) is a little new to me and I'll have to think about it some more. thank you
