Ok so at work today( a retail store) a woman with two kids (Idk child development well but I’ll say 5 and 7.....they walk talk and have teeth....like....lots of teeth) anywho she sits down in the middle of the floor and pulls her shirt all the way down and both kids run at these titties like it’s a brand new bike. Now I get its natural, I’ll go along with its “beautiful” for mother’s to nurse but in such a public way with such old children?!? I thought a big indicator that you don’t need to breast feed is....idk....teeth!! Am I way off base here?

i agree and think that's too old for that. what do doctors say?

My mom breastfed me til I was about a year old. BTW, the idea that breastfeeding keeps you from getting pregnant, yea, not so much. My brother was born 10 months after me.

I would suggest that potty training and stopping breastfeeding probably go hand in hand.

No. Too old, too public, too confrontational. This wasn't biology, this was political theatre.

I asked my wife, who has more experience and knowledge than I do about child development. Her first reaction was, "Wow. That's weird and inappropriate behavior."

I asked some more questions to get more info. She said that it's unusual for people to breast feed late, but you could make an argument against OR for late breast feeding. She says most mothers go from breast feeding to bottle feeding when the baby is around six months. If people go beyond that, she says the rule of thumb is you wean the baby off breast/bottle when they begin to get their teeth and they can eat solid food. (Just like how animals do in the wild.)

She said that among those "super dedicated" moms who nurse late, she believes the most common stopping point is when the baby is around 2 years old and begins potty training. When a baby can begin to "take care of itself," it doesn't need to nurse anymore.

Her final thought on the matter, though, is that even if it's up to a mother to decide when to stop breast feeding, even if she decides to breast feed beyond the common standards, it is NOT appropriate for her to do it the way she did. My wife said, "Would it be okay if a mom decided to have a picnic in the store? No. Becuase that's rude. It takes up space and gets in other people's way and the store isn't for you to have a picnic."
