Justin Trudeau’s terrified 21-second pause, when asked to comment on Donald Trump’s threat to stop rioting using military force has made it to the pages of the New York Times.
Maybe Trudeau was reluctant to comment on using the military against civilians because his own father sent Canada’s army into the streets during the FLQ terror campaign in Quebec in 1970.
You won’t hear the CBC or the Times mention that.

The Charter of Rights and Freedoms is his. Bilingualism is his. The approach toward Quebec is his, his role in the defeat of the Charlottetown and Meech accords well documented. The land of the strong center is his and the man at the center Jean Chretien who served in Trudeau cabinets for 15 years, bears much of his stamp. The culture - he was the only prime minister who was a cultural and and intellectual star -bears his imprint in ways that are hard to quantify but that are surely there.

Well said @lukewarm. And let’s not forget the restructuring of Canada by opening the floodgates of immigration and multiculturalism was all Trudeau. Many speculate that Trudeau sought to dilute the threat of Quebec nationalism by flooding the country with immigrants who would feel indebted to him and the Liberal Party. Trudeau 2.0 has carried his dad’s vision to the extreme where he says Canada no longer has a “mainstream identity”.

There were mixed feelings about what Pierre Trudeau did, which for better or worse, was to assume authoritarian power over Canadian citizens with zero oversight.
“The Act gave the Trudeau government full authority to censor and suppress communications; to arrest, detain and deport people without charges or trials; to control transportation, trade and manufacturing; and to seize private property...Over the course of the (FLQ) crisis, police conducted more than 3,000 searches and detained 497 people; 435 were later released without the laying or hearing of charges, and 62 were charged.”
Canadians were so shaken that by 1988, the War Measures Act was replaced by the Emergencies Act, which directs that all future actions ordered in a crisis must respect the Charter of Rights and must be subject to Parliamentary review.
My point isn’t to re-litigate 1970, or question the wisdom of people like your uncle, but rather a reminder that sending in the troops is an unpleasant option that has been used right here in Canada. I’d bet money that memories of 1970 crossed Justin’s mind when he was asked about Trump’s musings on using the military to quell civil unrest.
