Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.I laugh every time one of these whiners lose a job after demanding higher, government mandated pay raises. 1st these people have no idea how much blood, sweat and tears it takes to create, plan and open a business. Then, how hard it is to keep the electricity on, the suppliers paid, the insurance up to date, and payroll checks from bouncing in the first 5 years of a business. They didn't use their money to purchase one single thing in the business, not even a ketchup packet. They simply showed up for an interview and took a job that 50 other people would have gladly accepted. But, what they failed to realize is that business owners are (for the most part) smart and determined. Why keep two people working when one will do? Why keep a person at all when a kiosk or self checkout will do?

The servers took a big hit on their tips, they should not have to accept the service charge BS. However, if you ask the cooks, dishwashers, prep cooks, and pretty much any other "back of house" employee's, they are all for the rate hike......until the restaurant goes belly up. For years the servers made bank while the unseen people got squat.

I learned to tend bar in Las Vegas. It was a common practice to "tip out" the cooks, dishwashers, and everyone else involved. With the kind of money I made, it made sense to be generous and keep everyone happy. I still managed to keep my 2 boys happy, healthy, and busy. And I paid off a new truck in less than a year. It was just the way we did things. When I got to Canada, the lounges I worked at paid the rest of the staff very, very well. I asked about sharing tips and the cooks, washers, etc. all told me to keep it, they made good coin. So, I think it depends on where you work and the people you work for. I wouldn't work at a place that didn't treat their workers well. But that's me.
@PamelaSteele The first 5 years the restaurant was open, the bartenders and servers did tip out to the cooks and dishwashers every shift, putting it all together in a fund (envelope in the office) and dispensing it once a week. Eventually, one of the servers (that recently got fired) complained to the right lawyer, and not only was the tip out stopped (apparently it was illegal to make them tip us out) but the restaurant was forced to pay all the servers and bartenders back retroactively for the last 5 years. After that, the back of house employees were given a "shift drink" from the bar every night and that was it. This was in Florida and the restaurant is a multi million dollar establishment and still going strong today.
