The objection mostly is to the mandate by the local governments without proof of effectiveness. Also it is frequently tied to locking things down again without proof of effectiveness. If they left it as a guideline or suggestion and people and businesses were allowed to determine for themselves you would not see the political vitriol about it.

@debb1eb Before the mandate I was seeing a lot of resistance to wear one online as well as from my husband and friends. At the beginning of the lock down it was hit or miss seeing people in stores wearing one aside from employees. Maybe that was due to the even less information we had. But, frequently I saw them promoted as an essential from news sources like CNN. CNN demonized people who didn't wear one even though no one still knows just how effective they really are.(Just to name one news source, others do it as well)

I'm absolutely against making it mandated, though. While I can understand the mind set of "better safe than sorry", there's simply not enough proof and it's a slippery slope. Also, I've seen studies that show that prolonged mask wearing can be detrimental to those with respiratory problems.

I guess the biggest thing that irritates me is that I don't like that wearing a mask being looked at as a reflection of your character, or your political beliefs, rather than a personal choice. I'm unsure if boycotting a mandate by not wearing one is smart considering the little we know.

I understand why people are resistant to wearing the masks especially when the media and others are the mask police shaming people for exercising their rights. I personally have a medical condition that makes wearing a mask impact my condition. With the data on asymptomatic people rarely spreading the virus I think most people that choose not to wear a mask believe that seemingly healthy people should not have to wear one. I live in Phoenix and very few people I saw wore masks in April and May and the Covid numbers continued to decline. The most recent outbreak started in early June, think BLM protests. Also the other area hit was at the border with migrant workers which probably explains some of Texas and Florida. Arizona numbers have been declining since the beginning of July. I think social distancing is more effective than wearing masks. Sorry for my rambling post but it is a complex issue that intertwines conflicting opinions from politicians, media, scientists and doctors some based on facts and data and others based on agendas.

@debb1eb Having medical conditions is absolutely why I hate this push to mandate! It's like common sense has gone out the window. It's extremely frustrating that people are being judged just for not wearing one. Crazy. Heck! Even if someone doesn't have any medical issues, they shouldn't be forced! The media is running with this "only these studies" approach that don't take into account things like medical conditions or even building up a tolerance (sorry, I can't name the source. But, i did see that exposure could actually be a good thing)

I realize that I'm wearing one partly to shop in peace, as well as there still is a chance it helps. But, I'm not deluded to the extent that I'm about to bite someone head off about it let alone push for any mandate. My husband doesn't wear one, some of out family and friends do. I could also write a ton about my irratation with it lol I'm sorry that you're affected even more by it.

Tbh, it makes it even harder for me to even believe the MSM after the thousands of protesters and rioters are somehow ok to violate every social distancing guidance, but one person at walmart gets berated online for not wearing a mask. It's insane.
