Should parents have a choice of where to send their children to school? The teacher's union vehemently opposes charter schools, school vouchers and school choice. Their argument against school choice always seems to focus on how it would “defund” public schools by “draining” monies away. Parents who support school choice claim that the vouchers enable poor and lower middle class students to attend any private, parochial, or charter school willing to enroll additional students.

What is your take on it? Should all tax paying parents of students be able to choose? Or, should every student be required to attend tax-funded, highly regulated public schools?

Yes, parents should have the choice, and I support the idea of charter schools. I am nervous about the idea of school vouchers, however. My concern is that such vouchers will inevitably be seen as subsidies and that once they are accepted the government will then try to tell us what we can do if we take them. This will end up taking away the very choice we seek to have over the education of our children. I prefer the kind of competition that charter schools brings, so that parents can choose the kind of school to which they want to send their children. This may make it more difficult to pay for schooling for some parents, which is one of the factors (although not the the primary one) that led my wife and I to homeschool all three of our children. I'm sure I need to think about this more, though.

I've been doing my research for the past few months. One common factor is that money is in these failing school districts. Everyone is getting paid without performance to back it up. We could look at Baltimore and Detroit, these school districts get more money per pupil than the rest of their state.

People want the opportunity to choose a better option. If private can compete with public, that should create a better outcome. It gives both an incentive to do better but likely the public will fail because it's riddled with corruption from teachers unions and elected school boards.

I've come to the realization that the overt nature that liberals cheer for the lack of school choice is either by ignorance on the effects of not having it or purely political because the unions back up the Democrat party.

If people understood how some areas, parents cry when their children don't get picked for the local charter school. They are crying because their childrens future will likely fail if they stay in a failing school. They won't be prepared for college and they will repeat the cycle of poverty.

Now as far as taxes go, it's tough to say. There is something to be said about investing in education for your community and it possibly resulting in a better surrounding. If people with money are the only ones getting educated, that reduces the quality of your community. That's kind of how I see it. However, we need to curb how local politicians keep increasing property taxes for their own gain and no results.

I say defund public schools or let the parents have a choice. The teacher’s unions are just as crooked as the other unions. All the public schools are doing is indoctrinating our children.

Parent's choice should be the overriding variable.
What I'm seeing here is families choosing the "on-line" from home option in the school systems and hiring tutors to do "hands on" teaching based on the cyber curriculum.

I think you should be able to educate your children as you see fit and if you don't use public schools
you should not have to pay taxes for them then that is choice
