A Sydney pediatrician has questioned the readiness of clinicians and courts to permit young people to embark on potentially irrever­sible medical intervention to alter their gender, describing it as a “dangerous fad” fuelled by “powerful ideologues”.

Western Sydney University professor John Whitehall, who has more than 50 years’ experience treating children, has also expressed­ concerns that the long-term risks of prescribing puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones in the treatment of ­gender dysphoria are not fully understood.

The leading pediatrician advocates a “watchful waiting” approac­h, arguing that inter­national evidence shows a vast majority of children who question their gender will revert to their natal sex by puberty.

Professor Whitehall, who drew a crowd of protesters when he spoke at an Australian Christian Lobby event about the content­ious Safe Schools program in Melbourne on Tuesday, said yesterday that colleagues were starting to question the growing acceptance of radical medical intervention to treat the disorder, at least priv­ately. “But we’re up against a small but powerful group of ideologues,” he said, pointing to the transgender lobby, which is campaigning to remove the Family Court from approvin­g medical decisions­ on behalf of transgender youth.

“All of what we’re currently doing is experimental,” he said. “There’s little evidence of the posit­ive effects … They’re saying there’s no evidence of harm.

“Well, actually, there is.”

In an article published in Quadrant this month, Professor Whitehall cites several studies overseas that have found hormone depriv­ation can impact on the brain, affectin­g memory, executive func­tion and cerebral function.

Professor Whitehall also questioned the sharp increase in the number of transgender youths seeking treatment.

In 2012, there were 18 referrals to the gender clinic­ run by ­Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital. That figure rose to 200 last year.

“I think it’s a dangerous fad; a dangerous behavioural fashion trend fuelled by the ideologues and fuelled by the media,” he said. Professor Whitehall said he was concerned that programs such as Safe Schools, which promotes gender fluidity and provides schools with resources to assist students who want to transition, were causing extra pressure.

The use of children in gender engineering is arguably a form of abuse. Research on the long-term effects of hormone therapy and puberty blockers is scarce. And the test subjects — children — cannot provide meaningful consent because their minds have not yet matured. Yet the medicalisation of gender has made it easier for children deemed abnormal to be corrected. Queer activists encourage the practice because it disrupts the relationship between birth sex, gender expression and heterosexuality that forms the foundation of both the natural family and the private sphere.
