So while I speak english, I was born in Chile, South america, and Spanish is my first language.

I still speak Spanish exclusively with my parents both at home and I'm public.

If you could, would you round my family up and kill us to neutralize the threat we present merely by speaking Spanish?

@TheMiddleWay
Your refusal to assimilate, along with 10's of millions of other Hispanics who refuse to assimilate, are a threat to society. So yes, you all should be rounded up and killed before you wreak further damage on our society.

Curious to know how many other people think that us spanish-speakers should be rounded up and killed for no other reason than we speak spanish?

No one should be rounded up and killed because of the language they speak. At the same time, if one does not speak an official language of the country one is in, one should not expect to be accommodated by those who do. It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure they are able to function in society - not the other way around.

That is ridiculous.
Nobody should be punished for not learning a language. Whoever said this is in an extreme minority of assholes. Avoid them.

I know Mexican workers who work in the wineries of Napa Vally and spend all their time with Mexicans. They tend not to learn English. They are great guys!
For immigrants who move to the USA, some are old and mostly have contact with other immigrants and their family. Who cares if they learn English? Theirs kids will learn English and assimilate.

I live in Mexico and speak Spanish, though when I arrived, I didn't. People were nice to me anyway.
There are some expats or immigrants in Mexico who don't speak Spanish. Ideally they would learn it, but if people can get by without learning a new language, that is their choice. Many are old and just don't have the interest. It would be nice if some government services such as the immigration office would speak English for them.

In an ideal world, many more people in both Mexico and the USA would speak both English and Spanish. It would be good for tourism, international and cultural relations, and be fun!

It is to the benefit of both the individual and those in his community that he learn the language that is predominantly spoken in said community or culture. Which in the US would be English.

Should a person recieve different treatment or have violence of some sort committed upon them for simply not using the English language - either by choice or for lack of ability to....? Seriously now, that's not even a rational fucking question.

Yikes. Sorry you experienced that, but I'm not surprised. That sort of thing is often offered on here as justification for conspiracy theories about leftists, liberals, and Jewish people, and the idea that non-Anglo people are inherently unable to integrate and deserve to be stripped of human rights and deported. Never mind actually studying history (including the immigrant background and treatment of their own family), accounting for moral obligations to people in other countries, and the results of studies on the integration of immigrant families (who are largely integrated by the second generation). They see immigration of people who speak other languages as an invasion--an act of war--and ethnic cleansing, and so they want to ethnically cleanse and purge leftist and liberal allies in return.

My favorite quotation to offer such folks: [harpers.org]

You are apart of the America, as you must fight for your own. All of us, must do the same. Being the most Polyglot Country! We used to tell jokes on each other. Now it is knives! What the hell happened?
Threatening death to you and yours, is NEVER called for. Thanks for letting us know what is happening to you. We will also, defend you, best we can.
Humans do not like that some one can speak about them, to their face, and not even know they are being slandered. We like to know what you are saying. This is because we do have "fighting words". We do come to blows. We are not always civilized. Forgive the misunderstandings, but always.....protect your self, too! We all do.

If you live in the USA you should speak English and Spanish with your parents. Two languages is better than one.
Your parents should learn English as well as they can. It's silly to be in a country and not learn the language.

I will assume you dealt with a keyboard warrior but carry a knife just in case. Anywhere you see tattoos and wonder how they could do that? Those are targets.

@TheMiddleWay Sorry. Obviously not. It's not cause for a dirty look much less anything more extreme. Carry the knife just in case.

@TheMiddleWay I like sticks too.

If you live in the USA yes you should speak English.

Howdy @TheMiddleWay,

In the late 1800s many American cities had 2nd and 3rd ranked (by circulation) foreign language daily newspapers. At least one large mid-west city's first ranked daily was German. It wasn't always accepted gracefully, but we learned to move past it.

Some people, a minority, say the same kinds of things today. We'll move past it.

A bit more context is required although I understand why you would not think so.

The nature of the internet and anonymity is that it allows people to be hyperbolic to the point of suggesting genocide as a remedy for cultural conflicts. Even the worst racists I have run into have never taken a genocidal position when talking to them in person. Since we are not mind readers we can't say if they actually hold genocidal positions. While life becomes a bit complicated when you assume that people are not being honest taking statements at their face value is probably not a good idea either. There is no simple answer to when you should believe what people say and when you should not.

If you go trolling for hatred you will find it somewhere in the ocean of people that make up any society. If you troll for racism you will find it. If you troll for the cult of social justice you will find it.

@TheMiddleWay The site has recently partnered with white nationalists, so I wouldn't put much stock in its terms. Also, even though many may not act on their hated, such people are disproportionately represented among people with power (e.g. Peter Thiel), and the powerful have a history of exploiting hatred to divide and conquer. Moreover, millions of people voted for Trump believing that he would take a hard line on all non-Anglo immigrants.

@WilyRickWiles

"millions of people voted for Trump believing that he would take a hard line on all non-Anglo immigrants."

WOW, you seriously believe that bullcrap. Most voters for Trump were excited that Trump was dedicated to re-energizing the American spirit and believed firmly in National Pride and bringing back the power and success the U.S. once enjoyed prior to globalism's takeover.

As a land built strong by its multi-cultural immigrant base ... which included millions who initially did not speak English, it is absurd that you would make such a bigoted assertion.

Elder people immigrating to the country most often do not learn English and are thus limited to their own small communities within the fabric of the whole. Age does not always favor learning a new language late in life.

As to exterminating those who do not fully assimilate, that truly is a pathetic stance held only by the most ignorant of society ... the same people who most likely are incapable of learning another language themselves.

@torontogal4388 You're saying the same thing I did--just using euphemisms.

I saw it in my own family--descended from Irish, French-Canadian, Norwegian, and German immigrants, some of whom did not speak English their entire life, were not naturalized, and faced discrimination from the KKK. Somehow just a few generations later, dozens of my first cousins are more than half English and adopted the worst aspects of that culture and its chauvinism!

@WilyRickWiles Actually, you seem to have skimmed over

"millions of people voted for Trump believing that he would take a hard line on all non-Anglo immigrants."

WOW, you seriously believe that bullcrap. Most voters for Trump were excited that Trump was dedicated to re-energizing the American spirit and believed firmly in National Pride and bringing back the power and success the U.S. once enjoyed prior to globalism's takeover.

"Illegal immigrants" was the desired hard line ... NOT the source of their nationality.

@WilyRickWiles The "euphemisms" (how very quaint of you) were directed at the original poster's question.

@torontogal4388 The thing about nationalism, or nativism, is that it is inherently exclusionary. People who do not fit the norm are not considered full citizens. We saw the extreme consequences of such thinking during the Holocaust and are getting another taste from our country's treatment of immigrants. It's a backward-looking way of thinking--seeking to enforce traditional hierarchies and values, which due to our history are tied up with whiteness, rather than protect universal civil liberties. Moreover, the idea of "globalism" evokes antisemitic conspiracy theories and erases the distinction between undemocratic (or neoliberal) multilateral institutions and democratic internationalism.

@WilyRickWiles Tell that to the NWO and the PRC. Doubt it would even buy you a cup of coffee.

@torontogal4388 NWO is not a real thing. The European Union, the United States, and oligarchs are. China is another thing entirely. Be more specific and we can actually have a discussion.

@WilyRickWiles Fine then, the good old UN. And I suppose Albert Pike writing on the NWO was pure fiction.

We sir are quite obviously like oil and water. I'm happy to leave it at that. Having the upper hand has never been my goal in discourse.

@torontogal4388 A founding Know Nothing, Confederate officer, white supremacist, and possible KKK leader, nice. As before, I refer you to Lincoln's words on the matter. [harpers.org]

Are you still scared of Catholics or have they been assimilated into your worldview? Just scared of the Latino ones, perhaps? And "the blacks" of course.

We can discuss problems with the UN, but they are a function of its neoliberal member states. And from what I understand, it also has less inherent power than the EU, for example.
