Question

The impossible republican choice.
They can either:

a) Push for filling the vacant SCOTUS seat 7 weeks prior to an election and endure the onslought of criticism because just 4 years ago, they refused to do the same 32 weeks prior to the election.

OR

b) Not fill the vacant SCOTUS seat confident that they will win the election and be able to fill it anyways, that way there is no criticism but they risk not filling it with another purportedly; conservative candidate (Roberts and Kavenaugh didn't work out quite the way they wanted) if they lose.

Seems like an impossible choice but it really isn't.
They need to NOT fill the seat and thus project FULL CONFIDENCE that they will win. If they scramble to fill the seat, OTOH, they are defacto saying they are not confident they will win and that will erode voter confidence in them.

If Mitch goes ahead with the process of vetting a judge for Supreme Court in the Senate, hold hearings, etc. will it pull all of the oxygen from the Dems "Dirty tricks" campaign in the election, into opposing whoever is chosen? The process will keep every one in DC, except the President, and Biden. I like it. I vote go forward with the hearings. They will not have time to finish them, before the election, which is also an assurance to the troops, who will be placed on the Supreme Court after the election. Then their is the election fraud antics, with a 4 to 4 Court. Hmmmmm. Like your reasoning, Middleway. What about the 4 to 4 tie possible in the Court if they must decide the Election?

I think you've raised some very good points there, and I see why you've ended up where you are on the issue, but I ended up going the other way. I think they should fill the seat because that is why their voters placed their confidence in them. I guess we'll see.

I think Trump and McConnell have both already confirmed they will go ahead and fill the seat, so I guess the decision is already made. Some voters will like it, others won't, and there will probably be a range of reasons for people's opinions on both sides. What's new?

Not filling the seat until after the election is not going to sway undecided voters to pick Trump, just as filling the seat before the election isn't going to turn his base away. In fact, we're all for filling it ASAP. What if Harris, I mean Biden, somehow (we know how) takes the office? Trumps base would be pissed if he squandered the opportunity.

As far as dealing with the "criticism" (really a non-stop shitshow of TDS insanity), Trump deals with it every single day, what else is new? His "critics" need to understand that it is the perogitive of the president to fill the seat or not, regardless of what he felt was expediant in the past.
