With Trump and the Republicans we are not moving towards Communism. We're headed towards authoritarianism.

You may be thinking about the religious authoritarians from the 70s-90s. That's gone, it's been disempowered by the technological boom, and the authoritarians in that group moved onto the authoritarian left. Not the exact same people per se, but think about it as "the perpetual authoritarian personalities that will be in society in every genberation." If we were to magically move all of our people from today to the 70s, the left would immediately become religious as they only crave the power. They follow the power, no matter which ideology gives it to them.

@A1fredo hard disagree. First of all, the left and the right - if we are talking about actual people in power and politicians - will both stoop to great lengths to get and maintain power. They both crave it. It is not exclusive to the left.

Second, with the Trump administration we have been sliding further into theocracy.the president wanted to ban an entire religion from entering the country. The Attorney General is on record attacking secular people. The Republicans just forced through perhaps the most dogmatic religious justice ever, turning the court over 70% Catholic. Just prior, two justices called for marriage equality to be overturned. We consistently see Christians given special privilege to skirt the law, while other religions are not given the same accommodation. We still allow for child brides in this country because we don't want to interfere with Christian religious rights, and then we cry out about a bogeyman of "Satanists" abusing children. Taxpayers still federally fund "abstinence only" education in public schools, where they are allowed to teach factually inaccurate things such as "condoms cause cancer".
