In answer to a Medium Magazine article titled “The Only Experts in Racism are Not White”

Newsflash: Nobody died and made you Queen of English. You don’t get to define the language I was using expertly before you were born (I’m 63).

The more you use “racism” as today’s major weaponized power-word to shovel more guilt at class-struggle, generational inequity (now “structual racism” if that serves), tribalism, clannishness, ethnocentrism, culture-clash, xenophobia, religious bigotry, nationalism, parochialism, and just simple social and family feuds and disagreements — the more you weaken and diffuse a once-specific and useful term.

Once, Marxists found fascism under every bed. Now the same Marxists find racism instead. People pay more attention at first to THAT term, but then grow weary. Trying to co-opt the discussion by being arbiter of terms is not the way to better communcate your problem.

We live in a country where just over HALF the total murdered people are Black. They are not killed by neoNazis, the KKK, cops, or even whites. Rather, some 90% are killed by Blacks behaving badly in inner cities.

Nigerian US immigrants and Asians don’t have this problem (they both do better that whites). It’s not a skin color or race thing, but a cultural pathology. White crime and imprisonment has drawn closer to Black rates in the last 20 years as poor whites have increased with a inequitable economy.

It’s a complex problem all hands need to acknowledge, delicately dissect, and solve. Using “racism” as a private hate-word, term of abuse, excuse for bad behavior, debate weapon, over-generalization, and generally smelly accusation to throw at every discussion fan, will not advance us toward a surely complex solution. Essays such as the one you just wrote do not help.

And yes, now call me Whitey and prove my point. I’ve never harmed a Black person, but I’ve been mugged by a couple of them. As a physician in an east L.A. E.R. I had blood coughed in my face by a gang member who had just been blinded by a shotgun blast in a drug war. I’ve saved Black lives — how about you?

Why don’t we talk about that, rather that have you see me primarily in terms of my melanin? This is all so much bigger than today’s popular labels.

Only white? Well, I’d invite the writer to take a walk through the black slums of any North American city - Chicago, for instance, to determine the accuracy of the statement “only white”.

Racist and Xenophobe has been used in Australia since the 70s to label and intimidate... it became endemic in the mid to late 80s onwards.
