Few unanswered questions. First there is a storyline: "Using renewable sources, such as biogas, can help reduce the increasing carbon footprint, and thereby reduce the average rate of the increasing temperature of the world" which I don't buy into that carbon footprint is problem as presented in global warming doctrine or that we humans are responsible. But lets assume that all they say is true.

What is the downside of biogas? There is no free launch, and its presented as being perfect. So what is the catch? There is always a catch? What is it? Can you help answer that?

1. Few Technological Advancements

An unfortunate disadvantage of biogas today is that the systems used in the production of biogas are not efficient. There are no new technologies yet to simplify the process and make it abundant and low cost. This means large scale production to supply for a large population is still not possible. Although the biogas plants available today are able to meet some energy needs, many governments are not willing to invest in the sector.

2. Contains Impurities

After refinement and compression, biogas still contains impurities. If the generated bio-fuel was utilized to power automobiles, it can corrode the metal parts of the engine. This corrosion would lead to increased maintenance costs. The gaseous mix is much more suitable for kitchen stoves, water boilers, and lamps.

3. Effect of Temperature on Biogas Production

Like other renewable energy sources (e.g. solar, wind) biogas generation is also affected by the weather. The optimal temperature bacteria need to digest waste is around 37°C. In cold climates, digesters require heat energy to maintain a constant biogas supply.

4. Less Suitable For Dense Metropolitan Areas

Another biogas disadvantage is that industrial biogas plants only makes sense where raw materials are in plentiful supply (food waste, manure). For this reason, biogas generation is much more suitable for rural and suburban areas.

What are the advantages of biogas?

The advantages of biogas are many and significant:

It valorizes and exploits waste biomass and by-products to produce energy, reducing the environmental impact of waste treatment and that caused by the distribution of traditional fossil fuels;

It contributes to the realization of the green economy expected for the future, to the achievement of a circular economy model and a more sustainable use of energy, careful to the protection of the environment;

Reduces carbon dioxide emissions. The combustion of biogas does not give rise to additional CO2 compared to that previously used by vegetable or animal biomass, unlike fossil fuels that produce it from scratch;

Allows energy diversification. The use of biogas reduces dependence on traditional energy sources and is one of the choices of clean and sustainable energy;

In addition to generating electricity, it also produces heat. In fact, biogas can be used both to generate electricity and to meet the demand for heating.

It can be delivered in a continuous form because the energy from biomass is adjustable at will and can be blocked when desired, as well as fossil fuels.

Biogas plants are easier to build and implemented technologies are less sophisticated and easier to find. There is therefore a reduction in costs and a lower investment in their construction than other renewable energy plants;
Biogas, once purified from impurities and CO2 removed, can be transformed into biomethane. Subsequently, it is transported and used through traditional infrastructure, allowing countries to reduce emissions in some difficult sectors, such as heavy industry and freight transport.

4. And what are the disavantages?

Nothing is perfect. Even biogas, despite the countless advantages listed above, presents problems related to its production and use:

To power a 1MW power plant, at least 300 hectares are required, as minimum usable area. Large quantities of land must therefore be available;

The sewage used emits bad smells: it is therefore necessary that the plants are sufficiently far from the inhabited areas to ensure a state of comfort for citizens;

Transport: if the plant is located far away, suitable means of transport will be needed to transport the raw materials, as well as the final products. High traffic leads to high carbon dioxide emissions;

The use of waste biomass and by-products for gas production is not easy. Their high fibre concentration can limit the digestion of bacteria, which therefore implies problems related to mixing and the formation of surface crusts that lead to an increase in self-consumption and a reduction in the production of the plant

The use and production of biogas is currently a viable, effective and for the most part a sustainable solution, but technological improvements are needed so that even the few disadvantages resulting from it can be solved.

@Krunoslav the biggest problem is compressing the gas so it can be use in a moving vehicle, we have natural gas where I live and it is cheaper than propane or fossil fuels so the local government decided to use it for school busses. the plan looked good on paper but turned out to be a failure as compressing it to the point where it could be used in the busses made it far more expensive than the diesel they were already using. this is why you will see these powering generators or boilers at the sight of the production plants as electricity is easier to transport than gases. the contaminates that are in the gas can be removed by passing the gas through a column of water. the technology behind this is simple and proven most of the bad press about these systems comes from the petroleum industry that is trying to keep their monopoly on the energy market. many landfill sites used to just burn methane that gassed off from the garbage they had berried now many have stared using collectors and are using what used to be wasted energy to produce power. If the train Idea is to work they may want to look into using electric trains and just making a power generating plant.

@KeVince Unfortunately the "climate change" doctrine is a religion of the technocrats so they will try to probably force it using top down bureaucratic approach where probably the person hired for the job will be self identified gender fluid non binary lesbian him/her dance theory major. Because, you know "diversity and inclusion" laws.

But cynicism aside, even if this was a better way to go, ideally it would be something free and open market decides, because if someone tries it and they fail, the problem is theirs. In communist style state planing as the Bolshevik Boris is trying to do, when it fails , everyone pays for it, except off course politicians. So probably "great reset" war on carbon will end up like LBJ’s "Great Society" and his "war on poverty" or "war on drugs" and "war on terror" that followed it, and lets not forget Mao's "Great leap Forward". Lot of poverty and inefficiency with goals not met, despite all of them being "great" plans in the minds of the people who did not risk anything by failure.

I am not against bio gas if its left to free and open market to try to make it profitable and sustainable, but I've very much against communist central planing model. We are seeing the latter and probably will see the disastrous consequences of following the latter.
