I had a cousin by marriage that took care of my mother as all my brother and sisters and me lived a long way away for work. By that I mean she looked in on her, got her groceries, took her to the doctor and other things my mother couldn't do like move furniture. My mother otherwise was fairly self sufficient until her mid 90s. It wasn't a lot of work but it wasn't a small thing either. Nobody asked my cousin to do it she just did. We could have hired someone but my mother wasn't big on strangers so it was very nice. One of the neighbors also looked in on my mother every day just because she thought it was the right thing to do.
I don't think you are going to see this kind of thing in the next generation as much. They don't have the same since of responsibility. More importantly they don't have the same religious and cultural values. Say what you want about religion but there doesn't seem to be anything replacing it to feel the gap.

I'm happy to say that I have a handful of family and friends I believe I can really count on. It is a true blessing from God, especially since for the first 20 years of my life I really didn't have anyone I felt I could trust.
