I once spent a year feeding ducks and geese in Central Park at the pond at 101st street. Children love feeding waterfowl. Waterfowl love being fed. A city should be pro-waterfowl. Yet Central Park has stern signs warning of a $200 fine for feeding waterfowl.

New York City has 500000 wild cats. A good city should have a Trap Neuter Return (TNR) agency for the cats. NYC used to have one but the plague shut it down. Catstats.org is a network of people who take care of urban cat colonies.
New York City has a great public garden at Columbus Avenue and 107th Street, and a great chief gardener that that brings birdseed and fertilizer to the garden, and the garden is well endowed with plants and birds. There are nearby gardens at 103rd and 104th street that are poorly managed, poorly fertilized, rarely open, and not well endowed with birds. We need urban gardening heroes.
The 107th street garden embraces chemical fertilizer and the 103rd and 104th street gardens ban chemical fertilizer (allowing only organic fertilizer). New York City gave the 107th street garden an organic fertilizer machine and forced them to place it in the garden. It's never used and it's a butt of jokes.
Los Angeles is pro rat. The rat population thrives in LA.

Damn good point. Upper West Side Broadway is rich in restaurants, and they support both the birds and the homeless. I have a friend George who is homeless on Broadway, and he feasts on fine food donated by restaurants. Food used to not be a problem, and now it is.
