The world is full of contradiction. One example of contradictions is the Germany military in World War II. People think that the effectiveness of the German military was due to being a well oiled machine. Studies have shown that a lot of the effectiveness of the German army instead came from the initiative of the average soldier and their willingness to exceed their authority. While Hitler may have crippled the High Command it didn't filter down the ranks.
There is always tension between freedom and responsibility. The question is when does freedom become chaos.

Wow comparing to Nazi Germany is a bit harsh but true
U.S. troops.
Propaganda has always colored history, it is hard to pull back the veil.
Propaganda always has a grain of truth, it makes it more effective.
Their is a bit of truth in associating the current resistance to the cultural hegemony to some of the worst actors in history.
Live free or die is an interesting phrase.
If you feel you are already free you will be less inclined to die for freedom.
The average German soldier thought they were fighting to be free from an oppressive Globalist conspiracy and they were.
The average Southern soldier thought they were fighting to be free from an oppressive Globalist conspiracy and they were.
The point I'm trying to make is that the righteousness of your cause is defined more by what you are for than what you are against.
One of the effective strategies of any resistance is to push a negative hard and long enough until it becomes a positive. But you have to be really careful to pick a negative that most people will understand. That is why Trump focused the negative on China not the domestic effort to fight the virus. Making the war against the virus part of a wider war on Chinese expansion was an effective strategy. In politics it doesn't matter if you are right it matters what you can convince the majority of the people is right.
Pick your battles don't let your enemies pick them for you. Politically picking masks and social distancing as the enemy was a bad strategy. What people could understand was that closing businesses was the enemy and that was all that mattered. Because China.
What I'm saying is that Trump made the right decision to go along with the Masks and social distances and push the vaccine. He pushed to keep things mostly open but to allow the local official to be in charge. He needed to walk a fine line of seeming in control but not authoritarian.
What Trump needed to win was an overwhelming vote. In the environment of the last few decades that was going to be hard to pull off. Every election since Nixon in 72 has been very narrowly won. His base made it impossible for him to get the margin he needed to overcome the Democratic machine. The people he needed were suburban women and professionals. Trump only got 46 percent of the white female vote and 42 percent of the college educated vote. Both groups that were marginally effected by lock downs and drastic measures to control the Corona virus and therefor sympathetic to those measures. To win them over he needed to be seen as inline as possible with the "science". Whether it was real science or not.
Trump needed his base to not make an issue of masks and social distancing but he knew he had to not be seen by his base as being in favor of these sorts of measures. It was a trap that cost him the election.
