They owned 3 million acres in Canada in 2006 and growing. The kids are given enough education to read the Bible in German up to age 16, then off to the barns and fields. Collectively, they do a lot of work, individually, not so much. There are plenty of stats to play around with.

Hmm... I guess that depends upon what one means when he speaks of "the Catholic Church." The article offers a picture of the Vatican with a label referencing "the Roman Catholic Church," which, as we know it today, is really a medieval development.
The RCC is a 3rd century development, so it's less than 2000 years.
In the USA, the LDS church is the largest owner of public lands outside of agri-corporations (which lease vast amounts of public lands)
