Being the alpha male is stressful and dangerous.
In any dimorphic species there is sexual conflict. For most social species where the male is larger females will have cryptic means of resisting domination and males will be instinctually restrained from perceiving female aggression. Confusion is one of the ways that evolution keeps us from open sexual conflict that would reduce fitness. We are designed to be self deceiving.
It would be wise not to over react when the curtain is pulled back.
