The school didn't get down on the movie per se, it said it wasn't age appropriate, which may or may not be the case. Reading the article, this isn't quite as cut and dried as the headline
made out.

I agree there’s more to the story. And I agree it’s not about the movie per se, but a question of what’s age appropriate. Yet when parents try to make this same argument — what’s age appropriate — about Sex Ed, gay sex, gender non-conformity, or revisionist history, they are usually shut down as being narrow minded.
If school boards can play that card, why can’t parents?
My parents thought it was age appropriate but that generation had been harden by frontier life, the great depression, the dust bowl, WWI and WWII.
Farm life is hard on sensibilities. When I see something like the silence of the lambs as a title for a movie I wonder what universe the author is from. On a farm you just don't see the calf you bottle feed grow up and go to the butcher you see the cruelty of wild nature as well. You see the Coyote eat on a living calf and the coyote in turn get mange and die a horrible death.
Had Hitler not been brutalized by WWI history may have been different. Do we turn children into hardened individuals by exposing them to reality? I don't think that is the case. I think Hitler had already been ruin by an over attentive mother and an emotionally absent father. It's not just the schools that are failing but families as well.
I suspect that watching a film like that for kids today may be the same as me as a child watching films of Nazi concentration camps. I actually found the images a little traumatizing, in fact I still do.
We have lived in a fairly sanitized environment for a long time. It's only recently that the German people's responsibility for the holocaust has been honestly examined. When I was a kid it was all Hitler's massive mind control that was responsible. What kids need to know is that it was just ordinary people that made the holocaust and Jim Crow possible. What I suspect is that the people in charge of our educational system don't want kids to know that ordinary people like them selves are capable of doing such things. That kind of deep reflection makes people less able to be controlled and molded.

When it hit me that I could be capable of evil, when I really understood that I had the capacity for it, the Third Reich phenomenon finally made its own terrible sense.
From time to time you'll see this or that appeal to human potential which will go on about... "If it can be imagined in the mind of man, it can be made real..." and so on.
There's real truth in that. And it ain't all pretty.
They need to learn about how the black man started slavery in Egypt.
