Why the war started
Over the weekend, violence erupted at the al-Aqsa Mosque when Israeli riot police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades at Palestinians.
Israel says they stormed the mosque's compound in response to Palestinians stockpiling rocks and throwing them at police.

More than 300 Palestinians were injured, according to the Red Crescent, the Red Cross affiliate in the Muslim world.
At least 21 police officers were injured, according to Israeli police.
Hamas gave Israeli forces a deadline to be out of the area and when that lapsed, the militant group fired rockets into Israel from Gaza

Before the latest violence in the Al-Aqsa compound, there were Palestinian protests over Israeli barricades erected outside Jerusalem's Old City. There has been nightly unrest over possible Palestinian evictions in nearby Sheikh Jarrah.
Elsewhere in the occupied West Bank, two Palestinians were shot dead after firing at an Israeli military base on Friday. Earlier in the week, a Palestinian gunman killed an Israeli religious student and a Palestinian teenager was killed in clashes with Israeli forces searching for him.

The Al-Aqsa mosque complex in Jerusalem's Old City is one of Islam's most revered locations, but its location is also the holiest site in Judaism, known as the Temple Mount.
The site is a frequent flashpoint for violence, which unfolded again on Friday night after thousands had gathered there to observe the last Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Israeli police said they had used force to "restore order" due to the "rioting of thousands of worshippers" after evening prayers.

Hamas’s short ultimatum to Israel to remove security forces from in and around al-Aqsa, followed by the first barrage of heavy missile fire, appeared designed to deliver a surprise to Israel. Israel appears not to have anticipated the risk of such a rapid and serious escalation, or indeed noted how effectively Hamas and Islamic Jihad had rearmed inside the Gaza Strip since the last 2014 Gaza war.
@Poncho69 Problems that you fail to mention.... Hamas have ongoing terrorist attacks against Israelis and Hamas have it as part of their aim to wipe Israel off the map.
"The Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip on Thursday dismissed US and Israeli demands that it lay down its arms and recognize the Jewish state, saying the terror organization is instead debating “when to wipe out Israel.”

Hamas see the Arab world coming to terms with Israel and seek to disrupt that peace process.
