The article below from the NIH indicates there was an urgent need to develop an experimental animal model to better understand the pathogenisis of SARS-CoV-2 in humans (2021) but they didn't need to develop an animal model because the K18-hACE2 mouse line which was specially bred with the human ACE2 protein receptors was already available as the mouse line was previously developed at the University of Iowa for the original SARS-CoV in the early 2000s.

Frankly, I believe the K18-hACE2 mouse line was what the Wuhan Virology Institute was using in their gain of function research to create SARs-CoV-2 and who knows what other deadly virus strains. The WIV was funded by the CCP but it was also receiving money from the NIH (Fauci) who was laundering the funds through Dasek's EcoHealth Alliance. Fauci has been publicly touting the need for pursuing GOF research since 2011. When obama implemented a moratorium on GOF research in the US because of multiple leaks from BSL 4 labs in the US Fauci didn't let that stand in the way. GOF is supposed to be all about creating vaccines to save humanity but its also about making billions for big Pharma without liability and bio-warfare.

And what about all the more than 73 patents filed In America as far back as 2002 relating to various aspects of SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus and the RT-PCR diagnostic tool? Patents are held by UNC Chapel Hill, the CDC and Sequoia Pharmaceuticals.

The CDC holds the patents for the SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 genome. Note that US laws do not allow a naturally occurring virus to be patented.
