My biggest issue with “affordable housing” is that it doesn’t address any of the issues that make housing expensive, many of those factors are government regulations. I’m not against tiny homes or even these cubes, but the way these are run leaves a lot to improve. There is no ownership of them, you have no incentive to improve them and make it better, because after 3-6 months it’s no longer yours. I think a better option is to have areas with minimal zoning/building requirements where people can purchase land and build anything, and as your situation in life improves you can improve your housing. When you move you can sell it and keep your profits. I think the best solution is for the government to get out of the way, and let people start where they are and improve their lives to whatever extent that they can.

I agree with eschatologyguy. Having a small house and a large yard should be called a victory.

Interesting concept but extremely light weight article. I question the millions that went into these free-standing cubicles. There actually may be real value in the fact that meals, laundry and washroom facilities are communal. The need for high interaction may serve a valuable psychological affect allowing staff to really guide people back to long lost living skills. Not really sure the closet like set up is as beneficial as they seem to think it is. Too close to "cell" living. I have seen other set ups that were larger mini-homes and encouraged a sense of "village" which to my mind is far better. Trust CA to be unable to design nicer units within a budget.

If you live in a tiny house, best to have a good-sized lawn.
