Who is Viktor Yanukovych?
The 72-year-old Yanukovych was Ukraine's president from 2010 until he was ousted in February 2014 following widespread protests over his decision to reject the country's agreement to align itself more closely with the European Union, with an eye toward future membership in the bloc, and instead pursue a Russian financial bailout package and tighter ties to Moscow.
Many Ukrainians and many international civil society groups had also criticized Yanukovych for running a corrupt administration, including charges that he embezzled funds from the government. (Yanukovych has denied he misappropriated government money.) He favored a small cabal of wealthy Ukrainian business tycoons, including his own son, Oleksandr Yanukovych, and members of his extended family. He also amassed a large personal fortune.

Sort of a political tug of war that the people of Ukraine had little say in. Nor were they well-informed.
Poroshenko was installed by the west. Ukraine would have been better off to have stayed with Yanukovich and Russia. The west really needs to heal its rift with Russia. Putin, understandably, has no respect for the west.He knows it is corrupt, the Ukrainian people don't because its politicians are getting billions in US aid. This war should not be happening.

Ukrainians should have the say, no other nation & they did - they voted for Zelensky, not Russia.
MadVlad's aim has been for years to restore his former USSR - regardless of cost.
Belarus has corrupt pro-Putin puppet - Putin's aim is to re-instate another pro-Putin ally, Yanukovich - who was booted out by Ukrainians.
Putin is corrupt - he eliminates his opposition - anyone in Russia speaking out against Putin disappears - he has always been a tyrant
@w0tn0t The people of Ukraine voted for ending political corruption. That was Zelensky's promise and a second Trump term probably would have helped lower the level of corruption. Because the families of US politicians were all on the take in Ukraine getting kickbacks from US billions in aid. The Bidens, the Kerrys, even Pelosi. The Democrats need to hide all this plus what they are actually doing in Ukraine besides pulling political strings. The neo-nazis in Ukraine bombed the pro-Russian areas in the Donbas. Putin just got tired of these games. He took Crimea in 2014. And the two regions in the Donbas, tired of the continual bombing, wanted to form their own republics, Putin was happy to oblige. The signals from the US were green. The US would not intervene with boots on the ground.
Was Yanukovich booted out by Ukrainians? If so, then the Ukrainians were poorly informed.
The US had too much invested in Ukraine and too many skeletons in the closet to let a Putin puppet take power. The Ukraine people,unwittingly unaware, of what the west has become, would ally with the US and the west. It's the symbol of freedom. Has it lost any of its luster lately? The Ukrainians would face cultural decimation like the west is facing. They want to be more like Hungary or Poland I think. Very culturally nationalist.
I cannot argue the point that Putin is a tyrant. He is. Politics is a brutal profession. The west provides a veneer of benign diplomacy, that reminds of the treatment of Jamal Khashoggi by the Saudis.
That veneer, complete with glad-handing, backslapping, smiles and baby-kissing(Not so popular today) is used to buy votes and they like people to vote in blocs so they group voters together with identifiable labels. It's more efficient. Men/women, Blacks/Whites/Hispanics, Rich/Poor, you never hear they are doing something for the individual anymore.
That's my view on it. It opposes your, in my opinion, simplistic view of "Putin evil. Regime change now!" I am of the opinion that the progressive left is using Ukraine as cannon fodder for its own purposes. That is where the true evil lies.
