I was just wondering if anyone is paying attention to the WORLD "FOOD SUPPLY"?????
The Ukraine is the bread basket of Europe is involved in a war, not farming!!!
There is a drought in the US of A, seed shortages, Inflation, fuel cost, and the story just keeps getting worse!!!!!
I AM predicting a "Depression" that will make the 1930's look like a picnic!!!!
Convince me that I am wrong, if you can!!!!!!

America has vast land owned by the federal government that could be used for grazing.

Democrats won't release the land. American frontiersmen want to drill and till.

The price of fertilizer is almost entirely determined by the price of energy.

Methane -> Hydrogen (steam reforming) -> Ammonia (Haber process) -> Ammonium nitrate fertilizer

The price of nitrogen fertilizer is determined by the price of methane.

Half of the hydrogen that is produced is used to produce ammonia, and 80% of ammonia becomes nitrogen fertilizer.

Potassium is extracted by electricity, and the price of potassium is determined by the price of electricity.

Phosphorus is extracted with sulfuric acid, and producing sulfuric acid requires energy.

At Iowa State University, researchers published a paper on farming costs in Iowa and Brazil. Everything is cheaper in Brazil except fertilizer. America has energy and can make cheap fertilizer. Or it used to.

Iowa farmers get gouged on seed prices by megacorporations. Brazilian farmers engineered their own seed and pay less than American farmers.

If I were POTUS, I would nationalize the seed patents and allow American farmers to use the patents for free. I would use the patents as a foreign policy carot and make synergistic deals with friendly nations.

Ukraine and Russia supply some 20% of the worlds Calories. China is heading to some kind of "great hunger" increasing demands. Australia is another breadbasket that cut off its own hands with lockdowns. We, the US, were last year paying farmers to destroy crops.

Russia supplies most of the worlds fertilizer and fertilizer costs have risen over 400% Fuel costs have risen 100%.

Stock up and plant some taters. Dandelions are excellent greens with lots of vitamin C.

There is less absolute poverty in the world than had been in the 30s. A famine in 2022 is not equal to a famine in 1930. But, because of a fragile globalism we all rely on, an economic mass malfunction might level the suffering. Populations still practicing subsistence agriculture might suffer least of all.
