Girls, carry. Quit being afraid of a little thing that goes "BANG!" and get yourself to a gun store. Ask them who in your area gives hands-on lessons in pistols. Meet with them, guy or girl, and ask what is best buy. Do that and return for lessons. Then, go to a range until you don't flinch and close your eyes at the first shot.
Hundreds of times per year a good guy/gurrl with a gun stops a violent crime. You don't have to shoot. Just pick it up, look them in the eye, and say something like: "You won't survive this, either!"
Thieves and such are cowards and do not expect anyone to face them, or even less, fight back.
You have a human right to defend yourself with deadly force -- that little bastid son of Castro in Canada is an idiot to say otherwise. So is the leader of any other country in the world. They all have armed security. You need to secure yourself, and to 'Ell with anyone who says different.
