Sam Harris is a man of ordinary intellect yet has a grossly overinflated opinion of himself as a social critic and philosopher. Truly whenever I hear his name I am reminded of this old saying:

*Better to Remain Silent and Be Thought a Fool than to Speak and Remove All Doubt

Abraham Lincoln? Mark Twain? Biblical Proverb? Maurice Switzer? Arthur Burns? John Maynard Keynes? Confucius? Anonymous?*

"Sam Harris is a man of ordinary intellect yet has a grossly overinflated opinion of himself as a social critic and philosopher."

I suppose him and those similar to him, the so called "New Atheists" has a brief window of opportunity where they could quickly gain fame as well as infamy. And it was indeed a short lived period.

Today people like Sam can't practice their "rational, scientific" approach because the radical lefties would cancel them quicker than they can say "Orange Man Bad". And they can't go back on everything they supposedly stand for by alleging with the Christians or Muslims. Hence they are at best stuck in a limbo at the fringes.

It was fun while it lasted, but it was short lived for a reason. Their religions did not have mass appeal, soon as luxury of having such ideas was not there.

The so called New Atheists as a movement remind me of similar movement that failed for similar reasons.

"Deism, an unorthodox religious attitude that found expression among a group of English writers beginning with Edward Herbert (later 1st Baron Herbert of Cherbury) in the first half of the 17th century and ending with Henry St. John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke, in the middle of the 18th century. These writers subsequently inspired a similar religious attitude in Europe during the second half of the 18th century and in the colonial United States of America in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In general, Deism refers to what can be called natural religion, the acceptance of a certain body of religious knowledge that is inborn in every person or that can be acquired by the use of reason and the rejection of religious knowledge when it is acquired through either revelation or the teaching of any church."

[britannica.com]

"New Atheism" is more like esoteric movement, like Deism was, but more suited for the social media crowd than proper mature religion than can survive crisis points, In other words it can help people ask questions about their faith, it can help entertain people online with debates, but when it comes to providing people with skills and tools they need to deal with hardships of life, when they need it, it falls short. Hence it never really had the ability to catch on, at best it served as a bridge between more traditional liberal culture in the west and twilight zone / clown world of today.

@Krunoslav very well articulated - I agree. The problem - the main weakness of the so called new atheist movement is that it isn't good enough that they only believe what they do but that the only way they can validate their idea is to impugn the integrity and validity of everyone elses belief systems.
They proselytize their atheistic dogma on a scale that rivals that of the Charismatic evangelistic crowd who is compelled to accost almost every person they see and assail them with their own dogmatic nonsense.
Sam Harris is a mental midget against the likes of a Jordan Peterson - but I suppose he (Harris) does manage to gain a certain amount of notoriety by challenging the most brilliant thinker(s) of our time.

My experience is that people like Harris are intellectually gifted. What that means as a practical matter is that they can solve abstract problems. Generally however that doesn't include novel problems or those involving complex chaotic systems. Trump is a novel problem and society is a complex chaotic system. No amount of left brain categorization helps explain Trump. Society cannot be reduced to an equation or broken into it's components and studied in isolation.

Imagination seems to be a key to genius. I would say Harris is an amazingly unimaginative individual. He would counter that characterization by insisting he operates on facts not speculation. Even if he would agree that pattern recognition is a key component of arriving at facts he will insist that correlation is not causation. The problem is he would be right. But you have to eliminate the least probable answers to investigate.

The rule of imagination is more complicated. It's one of those things that you have to have to recognize. It's probably related to intuition. To do the topic justice will require a lot more space.

I disagree on this point. Harris tries to shift "abstract problems" into the realm of practical, mathematical, statistical...he is clearly out of his element when it comes to abstraction. He is decidedly of the "I have to see God and proof of his existence in order to believe..."

Generally however that doesn't include novel problems or those involving complex chaotic systems. Trump is a novel problem...

The only thing about Trump that makes him "novel" is his successful rise to power in the political arena. Trump is NOT a deep thinker. He is shallow, vain, and most of all an anomalous presence in the political arena. I think his appeal to the average person is that for lack of any real erudition on ideology, abstract ideas and philosophical analyses for problem solving he, like the common man acts instinctively on what should or should not be "the right thing to do" when faced with a serious problem.

society is a complex chaotic system. No amount of left brain categorization helps explain Trump

True! Trump IS the proverbial Black Swan. Probably the most honest and valid explanation for "Trump" is the fact that American politics and politicians have become so intensely and flagrantly corrupt that Trump looks like the closest thing available to redress and recovery from the gaping yaw of the egregiously destructive quality of American Governance itself.

Society cannot be reduced to an equation or broken into it's components and studied in isolation

Tell that to the likes of Sam Harris - tell him the same is true of God himself.

Imagination seems to be a key to genius

perhaps it is so. I am reminded of an expression attributed to the brilliant innovator and inventor Thomas Edison:

“Genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration”

I believe we could easily substitute the word "inspiration" for the word "imagination" and the expression would be just as valid.

I would say Harris is an amazingly unimaginative individual. He would counter that characterization by insisting he operates on facts not speculation

certainly true.

@wolfhnd, @iThink I just remembered this that I had in my notes.

“The four factors in radicalization:

  1. a grievance narrative, whether real or perceived;
  2. an identity crisis;
  3. charismatic recruiters;
  4. and ideological dogma.”

― Sam Harris, Islam and the Future of Tolerance: A Dialogue

It is interesting to see how big the blind spots are for Harris. Obviously this four factors could be applied to much of the left wing radicals, from Antifa, BLM to CRT types, non are affiliated with Islam or Christianity, and yet he forgets the principles because he prefer the narrative of "Orange Man Bad".

This begs the question. How can one be so blind. And the only thing that comes to mind is how all TDS suffering individuals got that way. Ideological echo chamber.

I also found that people like Harris who live in these echo chambers are afraid to have an open mind and research other points of view for fear of their beliefs being challenged. And if they lose their object of hatred, what do they have left?

“It is startling to realize how much unbelief is necessary to make belief possible. The quality of ideas seems to play a minor role in mass movement leadership. What counts is the arrogant gesture, the complete disregard of the opinion of others, the singlehanded defiance of the world. Hatred is the most accessible and comprehensive of all the unifying agents. Mass movements can rise and spread without belief in a god, but never without a belief in a devil.” ― Eric Hoffer, The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements

“Marxism was a simple substitute for Christianity. Replace God with Marx, Satan with the bourgeoisie, Heaven with a classless society, the Church with the Party,” ― Arundhati Roy, The God of Small Things

Both Hitchens brothers were Marxists and in the end Chris found New Atheism, and Peter re-discovered Christianity.

Dwakings found New Atheism as well, Daniel Dennett had background in philosophy, and Sam Harris tried mediation.

Sadly Chris died from cancer, I don't know where Daniel Dennett is at the moment, Richard Dawkins largely is in the shadows, and when he tried to defend his rationality, he was attecked by trans lunitics, and Sam , well he found purpose is clinging on to Orange Man it seems. I imagine Russian Man Bad is part of the story as well.

Speaking of Hoax #RussiaGate and supposed link between Trump and Putin...

Check this out. In one of podcast episode Sam Harris speaks with Anne Applebaum about Russia’s meddling in the U.S. Presidential election and alleged , now proven false Trump’s troubling affinity for Vladimir Putin

Making Sense with Sam Harris #69 - The Russia Connection (with Anne Applebaum)
Feb 20, 2019

Sadly the episodes is no longer available, but one of the comments says: "Sounds like two lunatics discussing UFOs"

..................................................

Anne Applebaum is a columnist for the Washington Post and a Pulitzer-prize winning historian. She is also a visiting Professor at the London School of Economics where she runs Arena, a program on disinformation and 21st century propaganda.

Amazing hypocrisy since the Russian connection was propaganda and actually it was the left leaning Google, Facebook and Twitter that was meddling with elections against Trump in favor of Clinton.

Washington Post is the main outlet of the US neocons and especially relating to Ukraine / Russia situation where all the corruption was going on and they did regime change.

Anne Elizabeth Applebaum[4] (born July 25, 1964) is an American journalist and historian. She has written extensively about the history of Communism and the development of civil society in Central and Eastern Europe.

She has worked at The Economist and The Spectator,[5] and was a member of the editorial board of The Washington Post (2002–2006).[6] Applebaum won the Pulitzer Prize in 2004 for Gulag: A History published the previous year.[7] She is a staff writer for The Atlantic[8] and a senior fellow at The Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.

However, guess who she is married to?

Radosław Sikorski. An US trained Atlanticist, that is installed in Poland to keep an eye on Anti Russian project in Ukraine.

Radosław Tomasz "Radek" Sikorski ([raˈdɔswaf ɕiˈkɔrskʲi] (listen); born 23 February 1963) is a Polish politician and journalist who is a Member of European Parliament. He was Marshal of the Sejm from 2014 to 2015 and Minister of Foreign Affairs in Donald Tusk's cabinet between 2007 and 2014. He previously served as Deputy Minister of National Defense (1992) in Jan Olszewski's cabinet, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (1998–2001) in Jerzy Buzek's cabinet and Minister of National Defense (2005–2007) in Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz and Jarosław Kaczyński's cabinets.

A graduate of Pembroke College, Oxford, between 1986–1989 he worked as a journalist for The Observer and The Spectator and in 1986 was a war correspondent in Afghanistan. In 1989, he reported on the conflict in Angola. Between 2003–2005 he was a member of the conservative think tank American Enterprise Institute. In 2012, he was included on the list of Top 100 Global Thinkers 2012 published by Foreign Policy magazine. In 2015, he became a Senior Fellow at the Center for European Studies of Harvard University. He is a Senior Network Member at the European Leadership Network (ELN).

Other activities include:

Bilderberg Group, Member of the Steering Committee.

..................................................

Basically rubes soldiers with all the top globalist war criminals and genocidal maniacs. That is husband of Anne Applebaum who writes books and propaganda for the globalists.

And she and Sam Harris be discussing how Trump has ties to Putin and stole the election. And Sam Harris cannot but buy into it all. For me, it took 10 min of research,

No way, Sam Harris does not know how to do research, he is simply afraid of what he might found. And if Orange Man is not devil himself, than what is the purpose of a godless man?

“It is startling to realize how much unbelief is necessary to make belief possible. The quality of ideas seems to play a minor role in mass movement leadership. What counts is the arrogant gesture, the complete disregard of the opinion of others, the singlehanded defiance of the world. Hatred is the most accessible and comprehensive of all the unifying agents. Mass movements can rise and spread without belief in a god, but never without a belief in a devil.” ― Eric Hoffer, The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements

Devil is personified in Orange Man, and all similarities with Donald Trump the man, are coincidental.

@iThink

Trump is definitely not just your average shallow thinker. He has unusually reliable instincts. You can argue that his business background doesn't reflect that but that is complicated.

@Krunoslav

“The four factors in radicalization

Sounds right - I wonder who wrote that for him LOL

It is interesting to see how big the blind spots are for Harris. Obviously this four factors could be applied to much of the left wing radicals, from Antifa, BLM to CRT types, none are affiliated with Islam or Christianity, and yet he forgets the principles because he prefer the narrative of "Orange Man Bad".

Precisely what I thought when I read "the four factors for radicalization"

This begs the question. How can one be so blind. And the only thing that comes to mind is how all TDS suffering individuals got that way. Ideological echo chamber.

I believe most TDS sufferers are not driven ideologically so much as by the human need to "fit in" with one group or another - it's a matter of chosen self-identity in desperate need of tribal support And young people intuitively gravitate to the ideas that set them apart from mom and dad. Ignorant though they may be they are driven to establish themselves as all grown up and independent-the typical college aged person would prefer to adopt an obviously wrong idea about something and to "fight" a proxy war over it than to admit to believing in the old ways of their parents

I also found that people like Harris who live in these echo chambers are afraid to have an open mind and research other points of view for fear of their beliefs being challenged. And if they lose their object of hatred, what do they have left?

Undoubtedly true! That is known as confirmation bias

Sam Harris is a frivolous man.
