immigration was virtually shut down between the 20’s and the 60’s to allow the millions who had come the chance to assimilate to the American value system.
To pretend an empty nation needing bodies to expand into the bountiful resource heavy pre Industrial Age, is the same as a fully populated society with limited resources and a welfare state is disingenuous at best.

The racial animus towards people with white skin certainly bears it’s evil racist head more than once in this selective history drivel.

Open borders use to work, before WELFARE! Immigrants were expected to support themselves and not be a burden on society. They were expected to learn OUR language and customs. DrN1, commented on the restrictions on Chinese. Could this be because they did not assimilate? That is why there are "China Towns" in most major cities.
We could probably go back to open borders if we handled immigrants as we did in the 19th century (1800's).

Immigrants generally integrate within a generation or two. The Chinese weren't given a chance.

@WilyRickWiles I grew up and lived on the west coast until 20 years ago. This is where most of the Chinese immigrant first came and still remain, same with the Japanese. neither group really assimilated, until the last 40 years. They both had their own customs and stuck to them. As an officer I did work with some Japanese descendants, but no Chinese The Japanese did assimilate better than the Chinese, they were more likely to learn our language. One of the Japanese officers I worked with and I had several discussions on this subject. That is why I have my view on the subject. Mostly, they chose not to get to close our society, per my friend.

"Of course, a history lesson alone won’t persuade whites whose anti-immigration stance is purely the product of racism—after all, that’s what created our current, restrictive system in the first place. But for those whose opposition comes more from ignorance and misinformation—victims of effective propagandizing from far-right internet forums, cable news programs, and White House talking points..." and progressive rags

Early documentation of immigrants - [lynnheidelberg.org]

First federal law on immigration (1790 - aka 2 years after government ratified) - "Once convinced of the applicant's good moral character,... The clerk of the court was to make a record of these proceedings, and "thereupon such person shall be considered as a citizen of the United States."" - AKA documented [en.wikipedia.org]

Further Federal restrictions on immigration -
"That it shall be lawful for the President of the United States at any time during the continuance of this act, to order all such aliens as he shall judge dangerous to the peace and safety of the United States, or shall have reasonable grounds to suspect are concerned in any treasonable or secret machinations against the government thereof, to depart [be deported] out of the territory of the United States. . . . (June 25, 1798, p. 571) "

etc...

"Purely the product of racism" says people who have no sense of history, society or reality. From the US, the most non-racist country in the world.

Ahh, the lovely Alien and Sedition Acts. And how many deportations were there in the 1800s?

But basically there were open borders, quick naturalization, and the the word "dangerous" meant something.

@DrN1 No body is perfect. Race has always been an issue. But less so over time. My objections on immigration have nothing to do with the color of peoples skin. It's economic and cultural. I'm willing to embrace anyone as a fellow American if they come here to be American. Not just take advantage of what America has to offer.

Side note. We're still screwing over the Asians. I mean we'll let them into the country but won't let them into Harvard. Not because of the color of their skin but apparently they score too well on the entry exams and take too spots from other minorities

A lot has changed since the founding of the US. And as a sovereign nation we have the right to restrict entry into our nation. Where once we were a vast land with few people, we are now a country of 330+ million. Our resources are stretched just to provide semi-adequate services to the less fortunate already here. We have massive enclaves of folks that have not assimilated to our culture and many that have no desire to do so.

100's of thousands of males 18-40 come to this country, without permission, from south/central America not to become US citizens but to work and save for 10-15 years only to return home and live off the wealth created in the US. This while suppressing the wages of native born. This effects the disadvantaged of countrymen far more than those of us that are educated and affluent

We have 10's of 1000's boldly marching to our border, not yearning for freedom but waving the flags of the nations they leave behind demanding entry into my homeland. Again, not to join me in a devotion to a way of life but plunder resources their own governments have squandered while labeling me a racist for objecting.

No, the time of open borders has long past. I have rights too. My children have rights. My grandchildren have rights. We are also human and have no moral obligation to acquiesce to the demands of those from foreign lands simply because we were fortunate enough to born as citizens of the Untied States of America
