LINK Moral grandstanding: Think twice before shouting your virtues online – moral grandstanding is toxic
Apparently, moral grandstanding is particularly bad in America, but I think what this article says applies to everyone.
Moral grandstanding is a special kind of status seeking. It implies that someone is using conversations about important or controversial topics solely to get attention or impress others.
Philosophical accounts of grandstanding strongly suggest that moral grandstanders behave less morally than other people in other ways, too. They are more likely to rudely call others out for not being virtuous enough, systematically disparage entire groups of people and hijack important conversations to serve their own purposes.

On the topic of one upsmanship on social media. My family was always interested in debate and the news. Figuring out the news today is a herculean task, posting information and commenting on politics and news is a lot of what I engage in on social media, outside of the contacts and following of family and friends. I have like 80 friends on FB and 2/3 are family and relatives,the other 1/3 are people who I have known on FB for years because of their informative posts or spiritual wisdom. Not much grandstanding there. But I'm not concerned that my politics or posts are PC.

If you're true to yourself, you have nothing to worry about. The genuineness of a person is important to me.
Wait, have I just virtue-signaled?! 
Often those who do this are deflecting from their own shortcomings, or feelings of inadequacy .... their own lives are a mess or disappointing and they are really angry at the rest of the world, especially those who seem content ....

We call it virtue signaling, but... yeah. It’s a technique that both puts you on the defensive and eliminates the possibility that a real discussion on issues can take place. It also genuinely brand the one resorting to it as a first class pain in the ass.
