But if they really were the enemy of the people? What would they be doing differently?

The first step toward destroying impartiality was turning news operations from public services into profit centres, which started around the time Walter Cronkite retired.
Secondly, with the advent of 24/7 cable, news became “infotainment”. The idea was no longer to report and document, but to grab ratings.
The final step was the transition to the postmodern era. Activism seeped into journalism. Balanced reporting was replaced by a woke-narrative, where news is delivered through the lens of oppression and marginalization. The narrative has a quota for stories on racism, sexism/gender issues, poverty/inequality, and the environment. Audiences are fed a relentless message of pessimism and hopelessness.
Look at the Covington kids, the Duke rape story, or Jessie Smollett. Narrative is the priority, not fact.
