He was given a life sentence for being an "Habitual Offender" not for the 2008 drug charge.
Harris’ prior convictions: 1991 conviction for dealing cocaine. Robbery in 1992 and Robbery in 1993. Burglary in 1997, and in 2005 distribution of marijuana.
He was released, because he did not have proper representation under the sentencing part of his 2008 drug charge.

I also wonder if there were other charges that weren't sure things for conviction, perhaps even violent ones, which were plead down only because the prosecutors thought he'd be away for life on this. There's often a lot more to the story.
