like i said im not concrete on where i stand on the issue still and the cure t issue for me has more to do with the argument that people just “hate” the other person. im not discounting that there are dangers in allowing it people to force institutionalize for the reasons you brought up and thats another reason i would be less inclined to support it as well. but i definitely think that is a flaw of the system not a reason to toss it out either. if we are going to allow people to force people into help centers for their own safety there does also need to be a way to be sure the person doesn’t lose all control if their life either.

@Joehlert11 easy. Limited duration, full commitment or guardianship. You limit the amount of time, review progress, ability and inability to care for oneself via the service plan team (family, doctors, social workers, and psychiatrist). But here in Oregon, it is impossible to actually have someone committed unless they have committed a violent crime. This is what I have done for a living for the last 30 years. I know what I'm talking about.

the scientific evidence for addiction being neurological and something that you “just are” is much greater than anything out there such as a “gay gene”. and even if there was you’d still have to argue there is nothing wrong with being lgbtq and more than just because you feel it is ok. addicts feel it is ok to be an addict to but we don’t take their word for it either. the comparison with race does not make any sense considering no one is arguing race is something that is wrong and people should change because being of a certain race is harmful to their lives. and part of why that is is the normalcy of it. Addiction and lgbtq isnt really normal. Maybe they are naturally occurring but just because they occur naturally doesn’t make them right. thats why a large part of getting many if these things that are only experienced by a small fraction if society accepted is to normalize it and make us think that its much more common than it is. we are also made to worry about offending others even at the risk of the others well being. just take being overweight now. now its almost taboo to even warn someone that maybe they should shed a few pounds even though being overweight carries many health risks. im overweight. if someone told me that wasn’t of concern for them because they were worried i might be offended by being called fat id question if they really care about me.

like if you can convince them being gay isnt a sin maybe theres a comparison to race, hell it’s been being attempted but even the best arguments clearly aren’t enough and having read both pro-gay and anti-gat Christian arguments i see why

Race is an immutable physical characteristic. Addiction and gender dysphoria are both mental so they are mutable but I don't think we know or understand much about them. There does seem to be a physical factor as well.
My only experience with either is smoking. I smoked for thirty years and about midway I thought I would try and quit. I lasted 3 days and swore I would never try quitting again. I didn't have the willpower to quit. I couldn't stop myself.
I quit smoking about 20 years ago. It didn't involve willpower. I discovered when and why I decided to smoke and after that it was only a matter of changing my mind. I read a book called "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking"(First Edition) by Allen Carr. I mentioned first edition because it changed after that and I feel it was less effective. I concluded that because more people I had lent the original book to quit. It finally disappeared somewhere and I managed to find another copy (2nd Edition) at a second hand book store. No one I gave it to was successful at quitting. I wondered about that and looked through it. The whole second chapter from the first edition, a crucial part of the data, in my view, had been edited out.

Essentially, a person has to want to change before he can. If they are happy being addicted or happy with their gender it shouldn't pose a problem to others. The general social agreement makes it seem weird. That social stigma may need some tempering. Sometimes a person engages in self destructive behavior or behavior destructive to others and that is when it is generally perceived to be a problem. The addict may turn to criminal acts to feed his habit.

Anyway, we don't yet have a complete understanding of humanity because if we did it would only be a matter of that understanding and then changing our minds about ourselves.
