So Bernie is in favor of population control. Let that rattle around in your sub-cortex as you imagine various scenarios that might squeeze into that big tent. Go on, don’t be shy. Let your imagination run wild. Get creative. You can be damn sure Bernie and his acolytes will, first chance they get.

I know, I know, don’t jump to conclusions. He was just talking about birth control and a woman’s right to choose and it’s their bodies and it’s no one’s business but her and her doctor and yadda yadda yadda. I got the memo. So has everyone else.

Except, no. That’s not how the topic was framed. Abortion, in this context, is simply a tool to be used to fight the bigger issue of population control, which, of course is part of the even bigger leftist climate agenda. Which begs a few questions:

Are there targets? Goals? If we assume that the world’s population is currently unsustainable, what would be a comfortable sustainable number.
If attrition through abortion proves insufficient, what group will next prove to be expendable? Gotta cull the herd somewhere.
How about old folks? Past their productive years, just a bunch of parasites. What do you think would be a reasonable cut off point to stop medical care, and, as Obama so elegantly put it, “Give Grandma a pill instead of another surgery.”
But, come on: kill the unborn and the elderly and you’re still left with a sizable population, most likely still way over your green targets. So what to do? Can’t just wait around for them to start dying off. We only have 11 years, after all. Gotta do something, now. Right?
So who do you go after next? And what techniques do you convince yourselves are justified, once you decide to get proactive?

And there’s the problem. Once opened, doors like “population control,” or “gun control,” or “income equality,” or “reparations,” or “climate control” remain opened for any number of hideous monsters to slither through. Because, in truth, it’s never about climate, population, income distribution or any form of justice. It’s about control. Pure, naked control. And there’s never enough of that to satisfy.

The estimated sustainable population without fertilisers are about 2-3 billion if we use our agricultural land optimallly. Eventually that will be the world population, does not matter what political ideologies we follow. And we will run out of cheap fertiliser eventually. And no, there are no alternatives.

Crossposted: Bernie missed the insidious subtext of population control in that question. His answer nevertheless correctly focused on individual rights. Focusing on people and their rights, as Bernie's Green New Deal plan and pro-choice support do, will be of paramount importance in confronting climate change. Framing the challenge in terms of overpopulation, which is a common obsession of undertaxed billionaires like Buffett and Gates, is wrong to begin with. [nytimes.com] Yes, Margaret Sanger of Planned Parenthood then, but also the anti-immigration organization FAIR and their connections in the Trump administration today. Moreover, many on the right, particularly in the IDW, are happy to accept the "race science" parts of eugenics minus the abortion. The right is jumping on Bernie's "yes" and strawmanning the hell out of him and the left.
