I don't know if these cop(s) were drunk and/or just stupid, but this is absolutely idiotic. Granted, this is from CNN, so who knows what the actual story is.

Two Minneapolis officers were put on leave after decorating their precinct with a 'racist' Christmas tree
By Christina Maxouris and Brandon Griggs, CNN
Updated 7:21 PM EST, Tue December 04, 2018

(CNN)Along with the ornaments and strands of lights, two police officers in the 4th precinct of Minneapolis' Police Department added some unusual items to their lobby's Christmas tree: A collection of street trash, including packs of Newport cigarettes, a crumpled bag of Takis chips, a cup from a Popeyes fried chicken outlet, a can of Steel Reserve malt liquor and some yellow crime scene tape. Critics say the items chosen play on negative stereotypes about African-Americans.

"These pieces of trash were deliberately chosen to represent how certain officers feel about the community they serve: that Black people are a stereotype to be mocked and the lives of those they serve may as well be reduced to trash in the gutter," City Councilman Phillipe Cunningham said on Facebook.

The department has since placed the officers on leave and has launched an internal investigation amid an outcry that the decorations mocked the precinct's predominantly black neighborhoods. The precinct commander also was demoted, according to the Star-Tribune.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called the tree "racist" and "despicable." On Friday, he vowed the officers responsible would be fired.

"Shifting the culture of the police department requires swift and decisive action," he said. "Termination is necessary -- both to discipline the officer and to send a clear message."

A spokesman from the mayor's office has since walked back parts of that statement, acknowledging that the fate of the officers responsible will take some time to determine.

"Every day I work to bridge the divide between the police department and the community, as do so many others in our department," said Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo in a statement. "The culture of the Minneapolis Police Department has undergone positive change, however as this recent incident shows we still have much work ahead."

Three years ago, the department was heavily criticized for the fatal police shooting of Jamar Clark, a 24-year-old African-American, during a scuffle with white officers. An internal investigation concluded in 2016 that the officers involved did not violate any department policies, and they were not disciplined.

City council members react
Cunningham, the city council member, said the conversation around the Christmas tree is about a lot more than the trash used to decorate it.

"It's about broken trust. The police break our trust when they do things that undermine the humanity of our community," he said.

"Reminders like this continue to infuriate me and so many in my community. They hurt EVERY gain made in improving community-police relations. On a personal level, despite being a (councilman), I am still a Black man myself and these outrageous reminders only further my own feeling generally unsafe around police officers."

Another city councilman, Jeremiah Ellison, said on Twitter that he's working to address the incident.

"It might seem small to some, but it simply is racist and offensive, and I'm sorry the community has to experience this from our precinct," he said.

Activist: 'We're disgusted and we're outraged'

"I'm appalled, I can't believe that this really happened, just to make a mockery of everything," said Chauntyll Allen, founder of Black Lives Matter's Twin Cities chapter.

"The yellow tape is so traumatic," she said. "It's just triggering to anybody who's experienced any kind of crime in the past year."

She said she felt the objects on the tree were "a representation of everything that's deadly in our community."

Mel Reeves, a Twin Cities human rights activist, said there's no trust to break because there was never trust between the police and the community in the first place.

"The police is supposed to serve and protect," he said. "If something happens over and over again, it just means it's something you're doing on purpose."

After the shooting of Clark, there are still wounds in the community that haven't healed, Reeves said.

"It just sends a message that they don't really have any respect for our community," he told CNN. "There's no trust. It's an uneasy tension between the community and the police."

"We're disgusted and we're outraged," said Reeves, who also appeared at a press conference Friday about the incident. "This is Christmas season. This is time for peace, goodwill towards other human beings. The message they send is they don't even like us, and that disdain doesn't take a holiday."

I’ve checked this story is at least 2 years old and is possibly an urban myth

1

If someone writes their name on a dusty piece of furniture or car, is it a reflection on the writer or the housekeeper?

2

if the stereotype fits - is it a stereotype?

OK, even if the firing of the officers could be justified (for a stupid joke??).
Where will they find someone that will work under these conditions??
Obviously, no support from on high for the guys in the street!!!
This type of command staff is the reason I told my grandson NOT to even THINK about joining my old department!!!!
Remember and beware you may get exactly what you wish for, PC police!!!!!!!

Exactly, firing is the wrong way to go. Make them apologize publicly, work with some charity and a suspension would be the way to go. Was it bad judgement? Yes, but these are 2 cops who the city spent tens of thousands of dollars to train and who had years of experience. It is overkill for the sake of special interest votes. The safety of the community is better served by reprimanding rather than firing the officer.

@JimbobNE Cops can have a SICK sense of humor!!
It comes from the things they have to do/see and be a part of!!!!!
This is a way of "blowing off steam".
After being in charge of undercover drug units/ a K-9 unit/patrol units, etc. I knew when to grab a case of beer for the guys for after duty hours!!!
If you haven't been there you are in no position to judge!!!!!!!
Maybe the powers to be should have grabed that CASE OF BEER AND TALKED TO THEIR PEOPLE!!!! Trust me it works, 25 plus years is proof!!!

"Where will they find someone that will work under these conditions??"

This was in an article I read about the tree from 2018:
"Also Friday, the Minneapolis City Council voted to reduce the mayor’s proposed police budget for 2019 by more than $1 million."

They can forget trying to find replacements.

I’m sure I heard this story last year

Ever get the feeling that some people just don’t have a sense of humour

Most people could not/ would not understand "COP HUMOR", it can be dark and dirty and even UGLY some times. As stated before, you can not judge if YOU have not walked in those shoes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Serg97 I know that my dad was a cop for 30 years and dealt with the race riots in north omaha in the late 60s and early 70s. One of his fellow officers, Larry Minard was blown up by a bomb set by 2 individuals because they didn't like white folks. I know and understand the dark humor, frustration and anger cops have towards people at times. But, they are supposed to be professionals doing their job. Silly actions like that are not part of the job. Go out with cop friends and drink and talk to each other about it, but you don't make a public display like that. It is something that doesn't help make friends with anybody, or at least draw a few people closer to trusting the cops in the neighborhood in question.

@Serg97 close to British humour ,we joke about things that other people make a big scene about then laugh at the people who make the scene! Anything is only as big a deal as you turn it into

@BikerPetehall70 Right ON!!!!! Another thought on this incident, maybe the tree was decorated AFTER the case of beer!!!

Okay..so now reality is racist?

FEWI Level 8 Dec 1, 2019

Maybe not racist, but still stupid as hell. You can't demean the people you serve and expect any respect.

@JimbobNE I would think you can only be offended if you identify with it. In reality, their primary job is dealing with the thugs and criminals. It stated.. 'along with the usual ornaments and lights". Just maybe they were practicing inclusiveness. LOL!!!

@JimbobNE But, it is OK to Demean and Disrespect those that serve YOU!!!!!! RIGHT!!!!!!!!

Not even worth reading if from CNN - unless you just want to see what lies they're telling now. I guess it's possible there could be some truth in there, somewhere.
