Tax collectors have never been highly regarded in society. Even in biblical times, they were perceived as vile and greedy. Today, "for the privilege of doing business", we've forced businesses to be the tax collectors. American businesses are critical to the tax collection system at every level of government—federal, state, and local. Businesses either pay or remit more than 93 percent of all the taxes collected in the U.S. Could it be why, in media and popular culture, businesses/corporations are often portrayed as greedy and the government as compassionate? Would people feel differently if the governments they fund collected the taxes themselves vs having businesses do it?
Do businesses, in a way, serve as just another function of government?

Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.When the word "tax" is believed to be a synonym for the words "extortion payment," then there are at least 3 groups, two having opposing viewpoints generally.
- Taxes are good, they fund the system (extortion with badges or otherwise), we love taxes.
- Taxes are at best a necessary evil, if we don't pay them, then worse evil will take over.
- Taxes are theft (call it taxes if you wish to invest in it)
