Blame Narratives? I'm gonna toss out a few I can see on the left, and few I see on the right. I wonder if it helps identify what the "center" looks like.

From as far from a framework as I can achieve, I see criticisms of the modern status quo as perfectly reasonable for anyone who isn't operating from a sort of Steven Pinker delusion that current year is largely an apex for most of global societies. From the left, the strongest mostly reasonable criticism that I can find is from the actual Marxist type analytical material structuralists. They blame capitalism and the social and cultural structures that sustain it for the atomization of communities, the alienation of individuals from meaningful pursuits in their labors, and the exploitation of labor through subsistence material consumerism. Most of them, today, seem to be advocates for either community organizing toward local co-ops aimed at communitarian better-being, or for large scale nationalization of sectors of the economy that are least well distributed through markets (like healthcare). These we might call advocates of Economic Justice.

Also from the left we have what I'm beginning to see as a polytheistic version of structuralist critique. These would be our friends, the Social Justice Warriors. While the socialists are more monotheistic in their blame of capitalism, their ideas of alienation and exploitation are re-imagined into privilege and oppression and redeployed against structures of systemic racism through the patriarchy. Both of these two leftist ideologies are Revolutionary, and seem to consider any and all resistance or push-back to be reactionary.

From the right we can find opposition to modernity (or post-modernity) among religious and/or cultural traditionalists who blame materialism, consumerism, and the capitalistic spread of indecency for breakdowns of cultural cohesion and national unity. From this same direction we find criticisms of global finance, globalization of commercial integration in general, and globalism in the form of efforts toward international governance on behalf of--and to the exclusive benefit of--a cosmopolitan universalist elite managerial class.

There is a faction on the right who identifies capitalism itself as to problem, and one who points toward materialism, and one who--frankly--points toward Jews or Zionism as the root of the problem. AH, BUT!!!! There's a faction of the left who leap the that same conclusion, so it isn't just NAZI and done.

So, is there a center to found from the above? I don't think so. I'm really not sure what to make of it. Both the left and the right have not so dissimilar criticisms of modernity.
