Then-President Jimmy Carter established the Dep’t of Education in 1979. Up until that time, the education received by students in our beloved country ranked consistently 1st in the world, or close to it. For the school year ending 2019, we ranked 27th. I have a lot of friends that are teachers, and I was almost one myself. I don’t believe it’s the teachers. They are ham stringed by government mandates and regulations. With todays education being replaced by liberal indoctrination, the only remedy is going to be school choice. For both unobstructed and unhindered quality education, and to finally eradicate the liberal stranglehold.

@hetrovono, good point. If you find out, I’d like to know. The option you point out makes sense as well pooled resources works well for small, close knit societies (e.g. quakers ), but it might not work so well for most city dwellers. Maybe this option should be combined with others though to come up with a “like-minded group solution. It would require effort and organization to get this together though.

@evidently: True. I know there are lots of curricula on line and available through different organizations. They require a lot of effort to sort through and analyze, but I’ve found different ones that were good. They also require an investment in time and money to implement them. There are national and international testing organizations that will let you know how it’s going and how the children measure up to their peers as well. Although I believe the stats show the children end up scoring far and away above public schooled children, you have surmountable drawbacks though. 1. Socialization among their peers (easily overcome with clubs, church activities, and neighborhood kids). 2. Lack of shared funding for expensive equipment (as your taxes pay for public schooling, most schools will allow your child to use their equipment by enrolling your child in their class. This will require a little work from the parents to work this out. Also, many colleges will allow children under age 18 to attend college classes for free based upon their education tax dollars)
Not a simple option, but I know many who have excelled by choosing this option.

@xtra, That may indeed be an answer and it is consistent with a capitalist society. Let the teaching organizations compete for the job and we should get more efficient schooling. If we left it up to the government t to pick the schools we would just get the cheapest version of a school, but by giving vouchers, I guess we’re leaving it up to the interested party (parents) to find the best option. The vouchers’ only drawback is the lack of bargaining power that comes with large group negotiations. The charter schools might and vouchers might be the best we can do though.

Fix public education? I think the short-term answer is school vouchers or Charter Schools.

Very Interesting article, I think the real option we're looking at in the future, is that if a school wants to continue to receive state/federal they have to pledge to spend the same amount of time on every ideology, I would rather my kids learn about LGBT, Trans, and all the issues, along with the way the majority of the world lives as well, there is no harm in teaching all views.

One of my favorite classes in College was my Religious diversity course, I learned more about Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Greek/Roman Gods than I had ever learned in my entire life, they didn't really even have a segment on Christianity/Catholothism which I suppose is fair since it is a very common religion in the US, so why teach college kids about something that they've most likely been around for their entire lives.

Most interesting part, was that a hard core Christain from deep Bible Belt in my state, that I was friends with, she was baffled about the Greek/Roman beliefs that the God's were responsible for Seas, Night/Day, x y z other things. She absolutely didn't understand that people without the science to understand would attribute these marvels to Gods... and those kind of echo chambers need to be broken. You need to diversify everyone's education, and public funding should be held from schools that do not pledge to have diverse curriculums.

It is that simple.

Many these days know nothing of Christianity. Truly diverse education would include it. Not exclude it. I’m leaning toward homeschooling and online with lots of choice! Get government out of it altogether. Not mentioned among the enumerated powers in the Constitution.

@Evidently Very Very True, I'm still wondering how public schooling became a thing, wasn't it like hundreds of years ago in the old west and smaller towns, the people just paid for the school themselves all together ?

That way the teacher could buy food for themselves and have a home, meanwhile the kids would get an education... I do not know why we ever stopped doing that.

Not quite sure “it is that simple”. If public schools spend their time on every passing cause du jour, how will the kids learn basic/solid subject matter like math, reading , writing, etc... I think the article was decrying the fact that the vast majority of the children can’t read even at their grade level. I know most kids can’t read documents that have any cursive in them as that is no longer taught in public schools. I was also amazed that when my oldest daughter was in public school and I felt driven to pull her out because I was spending hours each day teaching her what I thought the schools were missing, her national testing scores skyrocketed and this 5th grade child was surprised to see a cashier that panicked when she couldn’t figure out how to make change for the cash I used to pay my grocery bill.

I guess we could all do what I did for the majority of my children’s school lives (retrace what they weren’t learning of the basics along with the arts, social sciences, etc...). However, it seems to me that if the schools were to teach the basics, the parents would have more time to focus on the extras. I only taught my children one foreign language and an intro to a few others along with a lot of technical skills, financial principles, moral and social responsibilities, religious and spiritual life as taught in the Bible and very little comparative studies of other religions. I might have had the time to do more if I didn’t have to spend so many hours figuring out the newest math ideas of Mayan math with its dots and lines and what they represented so that I could teach them to my daughter when she brought it home. (The teacher assigned the work and when the kids couldn’t figure it out and asked her why it was wrong and how she came up with the right answer, her answer was, “I don’t know, that’s what the answer book says”.).

At least the teachers used to send notes home and give an opportunity to ‘opt out’ when bringing in questionable teachings or guests (like a trans guy who thinks he’s a woman and has the agenda of getting kids to think this is normal and should be celebrated). I was appalled when my daughter came home from her 2nd grade class crying and explained why. Her teacher cried because the kids were naughty. It was my stance that he (yes the man teaching the class) should have the ability to handle his emotions even if he was too incompetent to control less than 20 2nd grade children. BTW, this was not an inner city school and there were no weapons or violence, just kids talking out of turn. That was the beginning of my lack of faith in the public school system and the last year my kids attended that school.

My point is that I think it is not a simple question with a simple answer.

@evidently, you’re absolutely right that many people in this “Christian Nation” know little or nothing about Christianity. That is due to several factors. First of all, the Atheists’ war on Christianity has used a misinterpretation of the first amendment to banChrist (inanity) from school and most other public places. They’ve allowed persecution of and prejudice against nothing except Christianity (and rich old white males) or some variation.

Second, the Christian churches have done a poor job of teaching who they are and many have such flexibility in their beliefs that they don’t even know who they are themselves (big win for Atheists warriors).

Finally, there are so many denominations, sects and cults that fall under the umbrella of “Christianity” that it would require actual study to learn about the banned subject.

Thanks for adding your comment to the conversation. It was to the point in that (as I understand it) schools started off for the purpose of reading the Bible and often used the Bible as their text. (I have not researched that last point though, so I have no sources to quote - please feel free to correct and/or add sources)
