If The War of Northern Aggression was about ending slavery, why in 1864 did Congress fail to pass the 13th Amendment during the war with no Southern state representatives present? On June 15, 1864 the House, composed entirely of Yankees, failed to pass it, 93 in favor and 65 against, with that being THIRTEEN votes short of those needed to pass it. Tell me again... so this was was all about ending slavery?

The Civil War was predicted in 1788.

It is a well reasoned consequence of allowing criminals to run the government.

False. Republicans passed the 13th Ammendment against 100% Democrat opposition. Look it up. This article attempts to rewrite history by citing partial facts and facts out of context.

Did you even read the text of this post? The original vote was in 1864, well before the war even ended. In that vote, there was no Southern representation in DC and it still failed to pass. Where in that am I saying it never passed? Or is this just an irrational counter argument to facts you don't like?

@HatedDixieFan, Who cares how many times it didn't pass before it did??? You are obviously trying to make a point by using an half-truth out of context. Most of us call that a lie. When the actual truth is insufficient, it is because you are hiding something, like the fact that Republicans overwhelmingly voted for emancipation... a fact that apparently YOU don't like.

@TimTuolomne You are obviously trying to paint the picture you want to see. First, by using "13th Amendment", anyone with a brain knows it is part of the Constitution today so it obviously passed after the war. Second, the entire point of the post is that the original vote, which included only Northern states and occurred during the war, failed to pass. To take that and act as if I am trying to take anything out of context is just dumb. As for the Republican/Democrat thing, I don't care for either. It's a delusional dynamic where neither Republicans promote republican virtues nor do Democrats push anything except socialism and Marxism in modern times. I suspect you just wish to see my posts a certain way, so you have to believe certain things in order to have that image in your head.

@HatedDixieFan. Clearly you have no idea what I am thinking, nor why. Your post states "On June 15, 1864 the House, composed entirely of Yankees, failed to pass it" which clearly gives the impression that Republicans opposed the 13th Amendment, as if that was your intention. And you call me delusional" for pointing out the facts. Aeyuhhhh???

@TimTuolomne That post never said anything about parties. There was a sizable Democrat presence in the North even during the war though. Lastly, those present at that 1864 vote were, by my definition, Yankees.

@HatedDixieFan. I'm learning nothing from you. I only engage in discussions in which I do.

@TimTuolomne I am glad the feeling is mutual.

Most Americans either never learned or care about the history of the Civil War and all the sacrifices, what was achieved in its wake, on both sides. Few have ancestors who served in that conflict now. Lee and Grant reconciling at Appomattox, brother and brother coming together again as one nation after so much bloodshed and tragedy, with monuments and statues honoring the valor and heroism of both sides, is still a poignant meaningful reminder of our country’s history. The degradation and replacement of the inspiring, unifying historical narrative didn’t happen overnight, it’s been chipped away at for many years; now we are seeing an acceleration.

Those who know history are doomed to see it repeated.

It's true that the North and South were rather divided on the issue of slavery. But only about 2% of Southerners owned slaves. The large plantation owners had a lot of influence in the rather gentrified South. And a main plank of the Republican platform was to bring slavery to an end. When Lincoln was elected that's about all the Southerners could stand.

We Yankees might not understand what it's like to have the likes of Bill and Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Maxine Waters, et al descend upon you like rapid dogs, calling you every vile name in the book and looking down their elitist noses at you...

Oh wait, we do know exactly what that feels like. Separation seemed to Southerners the best way to solve things. But today were not separated by clear boundaries. Nasty, rabid little dogs are everywhere.
