Governor Newsom has much much bigger troubles about to flood in.

The City of Santa Monica is ranked as #333, relatively well-off compared to most.
This is what the City of Santa Monica’s City Manager Rick Cole who resigned on April 18th had to say.

Basically, Santa Monica is going Bankrupt.
Before COVID-19 many municipalities were on the verge of bankruptcy. After months of no tax revenue the high risk cities have been pushed far beyond the edge. I know, because of inside info, some of the high-risk cities are a just few weeks away from completely running out of money, the checks are going to start bouncing. Every day Newsom adds to keeping the economy shut down for California will add more municipal bankruptcies. Another month of shut down is going to be catastrophic, I cannot see how he would get re-elected in the aftermath.

Media will shower praise on Newsom and give lots of positive spin as he is countering Trump's message. No matter what he says the best political bet is to allow the quarantine to end in a matter of days. Anything beyond a couple more weeks is political suicide. The media is ignoring or attaching misleading spin to the protest, the media will turn against Newsom and he will become the next scape goat.
There is another hidden factor in this, I will call it "cognitive dissonance exhaustion". More and more people are turning off legacy news media, they just do not want the added work of more cognitive dissonance. Media praise points are dropping in value faster than is realized. Newsom may not be aware of this.
If Newsom continues keeping California locked down many more small businesses will go under. It will also collapse operations in many municipalities as they go bankrupt, that is they literally will run out of money. Newsom would have to be extraordinarily incompetent not to know this.
Newsom may have presidential ambitions, if the California establishment turns against him and the media scape goats him, he is finished
The irony is the protesters are helping the police keep their high pay and benefits. Police will get drastically cuts in benefits if there municipality goes under and restructures. The police should be thanking the protesters.
What Newsom is announcing as the next phase of opening has been the case all along, stores have been operating that way for the entire lock-down. For the past week or so more business have been opening. Yesterday many more have been opening, they are not waiting for Friday. Newsom is not leading he is following, he is announcing what has already happening
