As an amateur military historian and a student of the Eastern Front of WWII I would postulate that Russia has much institutional memory retained to deal with these situations even if the Ukrainian attack had more than a snowball's chance in hell to succeed. Stalingrad, Kursk, Velekiy Lukiy, all were battles in which the enemy of Russia pushed an offensive deep into their lines only to sputter and stall, followed by serious and furious Russian counter attacks that pocketed the majority of the enemy soldiers who survived only to be sent to POW camps in Siberia.
