The big mistake this man makes when setting forth his own view -- a mistake that neither Calvinists nor Arminians make, by the way -- is to begin with an English dictionary definition of *predestinate*, which looks back to the derivation of the English word (in Middle English) from the Latin word *praedestinātus*. The problem with this approach is that it ignores the fact that both the Latin verb and the English verb were used by Christians to translate the Greek verb *proorízō*, and it is this Greek word that we need to understand, a word that Paul used in a very particular way in a very particular context. When the guy finally gets to the Greek word, then, he already has in mind the faulty definition that he wants to read into the text, all the while claiming that it is both Calvinists and Arminians who are doing that. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. At any rate, the presentation before getting to Scripture is a mess, so I'm not surprised that the presentation of Scripture itself is a bit of a mess. To be sure, the guy gets some things right, but he completely ignores the fact that predestination actually occurs before the foundation of the world and not at the point in time when a person is saved, where he wants to put it. Notice, to take just one crucial example, that he begins his talk about Ephesians 1 with verse 5, picking up what Paul says in the middle of a sentence (which in the Greek text actually extends from verse 3 to verse 14), ignoring the syntax and grammar of the sentence. However, when looking back to the beginning of the sentence we read: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 *just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world*, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 *having predestined us* to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He has made us accepted in the Beloved." (Eph. 1:3-6 NKJ, italics mine) Thus, the man misses what both Calvinists and Arminians clearly see, namely that predestination occurs in conjunction with God's choosing of believers before the foundation of the world. The reason, then, that Christians for so many centuries have presupposed this same idea about predestination is that the text clearly states it. This is also why, when these groups of Christians come to Romans 8, they see God's foreknowing of believers as taking place before the foundation of the world as well.
