One of the consequences of impeachment is never being able to hold federal office again.
KeithThroop comments on Jan 12, 2021:
I thought it was removal from office that precluded ever being able to hold federal office again. So, President Trump would have to be impeached in the House and then tried again in the Senate, which would have to vote to remove him from office, before he would be unable to hold another federal office, at least as I understand it. Am I wrong?

I doubt that Trump has damaged the Republican Party. I suspect that his genuine support among Republicans is exactly what is was before and is as strong as ever and that those who never really liked him just feel free to be more open about it now. I seriously doubt that any of these corporations won't give to the same RINO's they have been giving to all along. Frankly, though, I almost wish it were true that they wouldn't. It might be a good thing if funding for some of these people went away. Then maybe they would go away as well.

So help me God. (Italics mine.) Although no longer under the UCMJ, I believe that my oath to support and defend the Constitution "against all enemies, foreign and domestic" is still binding. Therefore, if a group of states does secede, I will be one the side of those states that still stand for the Constitution.

KeithThroop comments on Dec 30, 2020:
I was born in 1965, which is the usual year that is given for the the beginning of the so-called "Generation X," but I have always had much more in common with the so-called "Baby Boomer" generation that preceded it. But, as you've pointed out @Naomi, there is some overlap, and there are really no standard definitions for when a generation begins and ends. As for any significant childhood event I remember, there are many, some very personal (and even some that are a bit tragic), and others having to do with events, such as the celebration of the American Bicentennial, or watching men on TV walking on the moon, or seeing footage of Viet Nam coverage, or being a part of forced busing desegregation efforts, or the constant threat of the Cold War with the Soviet Union, during which time everyone seemed to fear WWIII on the horizon, etc. When I was old enough, I joined the military to take my stand against the threat of the Soviet Union and Communism, and I couldn't understand why more of my generation were not more patriotic. Little did I know that problem would only seem to get worse, but perhaps now there is a resurgence in patriotism here in the States. It seems to me that this may be one thing President Trump has helped to re-awaken in many, just as Ronald Reagan inspired me and led me to serve in the military to stand against what he rightly called "the Evil Empire." He was a great Commander-in-Chief. Anyway, I certainly hope there is a trend toward a more patriotic America once again.
Nature doesn't make the choice between being conservative and radical.
KeithThroop comments on Dec 26, 2020:
Hmm... Given that "nature" is impersonal, of course it doesn't "make the choice" between anything versus any other thing. And, of course, it also neither "fixes" things, nor does it "get radically creative." If there is any choice being made, anything being fixed, or any radical creativity going on, it isn't "nature" doing it.

KeithThroop comments on Dec 19, 2020:
You have hit on one thing that really bothers me, which is an online world in which anonymity tends to remove accountability. It is one reason I use my real name here. I suppose it makes me a bit less secure, but it also requires that I be accountable for what I say, and I'm willing to practice what I preach. I'm not going to anonymously decry the way in which anonymity hinders accountability. That would be hypocritical of me. Having said that, however, as I see it, I am ultimately accountable to God for my speech, and that is where my true accountability lies. I take seriously the word of the Lord Jesus, who said to the religious hypocrites of His day: > Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. (Matt. 12:34-36 NKJ) So I try as best I can, in reliance on the grace of God, to follow Biblical standards for righteous speech. For what it's worth, and if you are interested, you can see something of what I mean by reading a blog article I once wrote entitled, "Some Thoughts From Proverbs About Our Speech." In it I focus on how we need to be concerned about 1) *what* we say, 2) *how* we say what we say, 3) *when* we say what we say, and 4) *why* we say what we say. https://reformedbaptistblog.com/2013/04/12/some-thoughts-from-proverbs-about-our-speech/
If JESUS was just a Sacrifice – Why study HIS words?
KeithThroop comments on Dec 19, 2020:
I know of no historically orthodox Christian who would ever agree with the assumption that our Lord Jesus was *just* a sacrifice, as if that is all we believe Him to be. It certainly isn't how the Bible presents Him. At any rate, we listen to Him because we believe Him to be the incarnate Son of God, who is fully God and fully man in one person; who was born of the virgin Mary; who lived a sinless life on our behalf; who died on the cross for our sins; who rose from the dead, thus conquering death on our behalf; who ascended to the right hand of God the Father, where He ever lives to intercede on behalf of those who trust in Him as Lord and Savior; and who will one day return to earth in order to establish a Hew Heavens and the New Earth, in which those who have trusted in Him will live forever. That is *just* a summary of the reasons we listen to Him.

Can only white people be racist?
KeithThroop comments on Dec 18, 2020:
My own experience has taught me that racism itself definitely knows no race; it can affect anyone of any race. For example, for part of my childhood I was a member of the only white family in an all black neighborhood. There were a couple of old white ladies that lived in the area, but we were the only other white people, and we were the only family. I and my three siblings lived with my father there, and later with my father and stepmother, and I often experienced attacks against me simply because I was white. I was called every name they could think of (the terms *honky* and *cracker* being prominent ones), and I was often threatened and sometimes assaulted. Groups would often follow me home from school deriding and threatening me. On at least one occasion a very large group surrounded our house throwing rocks at the house and shouting threats at us, but, thankfully, the police were able to disperse them before things got really bad. This was during my formative years in the early seventies, but finally my father and stepmother were able to afford to move us away from there and into a better neighborhood and school system. Sadly, I was eventually bused right back into an even worse situation that I had previously left behind, and I ended up being one of a very few white kids in an all black school, at which I once again experienced being on the receiving end of racism. Now, I'm not saying that I never saw any racist words or actions from white people toward black people during those years. My own maternal grandfather could be a pretty racist guy. My father, however, would not allow any racist attitudes in our family. He had been an ardent supporter of MLK and the Civil Rights Movement, and he constantly pointed out that we could not judge a whole race because of the actions of a few. One of his very best friends was a black man, a man who often took me and my siblings on outings so that my father and stepmother could be alone together. He was kind of like an uncle to us. We also had many good black friends in our church, which uniquely (at least at that time) had a mix of both white and black families. Anyway, my experience taught me that racism existed among both white and black people (as well as among other groups) and that there were also very good people -- people who are not racist -- among other races as well. So, I know quite well that it is *not* only white people who can be racist. The very notion is one of the more stupid lies I think I've ever heard. All people are sinners, and all sinners are capable of just about any sin, including racism. Oh, and by the way, NO ONE liked forced busing! At least not that I can recall.

It seems to me that the conflation of speech with violence by the Left is intended by them to serve a dual purpose. On the other hand, they want to use to it to justify their own actual violence in response to speech with which they disagree. We cannot long tolerate such blatantly hypocritical and utter nonsense in a civilized society and still remain free.

So help me God. Although I am no longer in the military, and thus no longer under the UCMJ, I nevertheless regard my oath to the U.S. Constitution to be binding. I will seek to fulfill that oath in any way that I am able, given my age and corresponding limitations. KeithThroop comments on Dec 9, 2020:
I have time to offer a few brief thoughts off the top of my head. As a Christian who believes in God as revealed in the Bible, it seems to me that both life and consciousness are co-eternal aspects of God. Thus neither preceded the other with respect to God. As for human beings, I would hold that God gives us both life and consciousness, and I would assume that both are necessary aspects of our existence as spiritual beings made in His image and that we cannot, therefore, possess one without the other.

A QUESTION TO CHRISTIANS How do you feel about this?
KeithThroop comments on Dec 8, 2020:
It is irrational to blame the teaching of Romans 13 for people's misuse of it. Almost any good teaching can be taken out of context and distorted in order to wrongly try to justify one's evil actions. Understood in its proper Biblical context, the teaching in Romans 13 does not forbid civil disobedience to unjust laws, for example, nor does it prohibit the protection of the weak and innocent, which is one reason why Hitler rounded up many thousands of Christians, especially priests and pastors, and had them sent to concentration camps. There were also many Christians who hid and protected Jews who, when caught, were arrested and sent to the camps or killed. The most famous of this latter group was, perhaps, Corrie ten Boom. The most famous Christian resistor of all was, perhaps, Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
Why Is an Ordinary Life Not Good Enough Anymore? – Alain De Botton - YouTube
KeithThroop comments on Dec 8, 2020:
I think that most people have mixed motives for things. So, a person can indeed be motivated to accumulate things because they see it a a conduit to love and respect, as Alain De Botton says, while at the same time being motivated by things like greed or the desire for security. I get the point he is making, and it is valid, but there is no need to assume only one real or, perhaps primary, motivation for the accumulation of material things. I totally agree that people need to learn to be content with what Alain De Botton describes as "an ordinary life." But I would also observe that we need to stop viewing such a life as he describes as simply "ordinary." In my view, what most people think of as *ordinary* is actually pretty *extraordinary* if we stop to really think about it. As a Christian, of course, it is my belief that each of us is created in the image of God and that, no matter how tainted by sin, that image remains in all of us. Thus we are each of us extraordinary beings, and all that we do that is good and praiseworthy is a reflection of how extraordinary we are, or, rather, of how extraordinary God is, who made us. After all, when we live well, seeking to be like Him in all of our relationships and actions, we are reflecting what is extraordinary about Him, and that is what makes life worthwhile. It is how we find true fulfillment, for it is our ultimate purpose. But, not surprisingly, I believe this can be achieved only by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. Anyway, that's my two cents. I really appreciated the the video. It was very thoughtful and thought-provoking. It hits upon an issue many people need to think more clearly about. I'm sure many who read this may disagree with some of what I've said, but perhaps they will find some of it helpful as well. :)
The Overspent American: Why We Want What We Do Not Need - YouTube
KeithThroop comments on Dec 8, 2020:
It is so important to try to live debt free if we can. Debt is often a kind of slavery to a cruel master. To be sure, some debt can serve a good purpose, so long as it is affordable debt. For example, I see nothing wrong with a reasonable mortgage that one can afford. But far too many people are living far beyond their means, living from paycheck to paycheck simply because they buy more than they need and do not save, and it would not take much to create a severe financial crisis for them.

The current pope just keeps giving me more and more reasons to be glad I'm a Protestant. I truly feel for all my Roman Catholic friends.
Although I like this site, it gets annoying that people don't seem to post any original thought.

I have actually engaged in quite a few substantive discussions, but I've also appreciated many of those links you mentioned. I don't think I would have found some of the sources of information otherwise because I simply don't like wading trough so much internet material. However, recommendations here have helped narrow things down and made it much easier to locate good sources or critiques of the news and current events. I guess you could say that it has served not only as a place for some good discussion (should I choose to engage in it) but also as a sort of news aggregator. I appreciate both aspects.
New video folks! Like.

The video that Daisy showed there is simply one of the most racist things I have ever seen.

Nature is not a personal entity. It is incapable of "punishing" anyone. Personifying it as a "mother" won't change this fact. All one does with such talk is project what he or she apparently thinks should happen. In this case, Prince Harry reveals his own attitude toward people he clearly thinks should be "punished" for not viewing environmental issues as he does. He apparently thinks people who disagree with his views deserve to get COVID-19 and to be "punished" in some way. What a guy!

Great job, @DaisyCousens. Very well argued and clearly stated as always. I very much appreciated your points about privacy and also possible side effects. I also agree that the actual death rate does not warrant mandatory vaccination, whether by the government or by corporations.
