I do have one small correction to make, however, which is that she really should not have referred to all of Minnesota as a "shit-hole." While I am not insensitive to the people who complained that some of the tear gas seeped into their businesses or dwellings, I can't imagine that would no be preferable to their business being burned down or the smoke from the fires set by the rioters seeping into their dwellings. As someone who has experienced tear gas (as I'm sure @timon_phocas has as well), I know it is unpleasant, but it certainly isn't as harmful as smoke inhalation or potentially dying in a fire.

The woman who set the fires had been arrested at least three time before this year. So, sadly, would this apparently be another case of Washington state letting people out of jail too easily and it coming back to bite them?

I find the antisemitism of @Thaw to be morally repugnant and absolutely despicable, but my approach to him has been simply to ignore him, which seems to have been what most here have done. Our commitment to free speech certainly requires that he be allowed to share his ideas here, but I agree that incitement to violence crosses the line, and I think the probationary period was appropriate. If he can return and keep from such advocation of violence in the future, then there seems to be no reason to ban him. If he he persists in such advocation of violence, then banning may well become necessary at some point.

In addition to many of the great comments here, I would add that it certainly taught the U.S. that we needed to take much more seriously the War on Terror in which we had been engaged already for decades. The fact that most people didn't even realize this fact shows how unfocused and, perhaps, willfully blind we had previously been in our waging of this war.
