'Rich people should pay more tax.
Naomi comments on Nov 19, 2019:
I must admit that I am so fed up with hearing about Brexit and now the general election, I haven't been following the news all that closely (until I stumbled on Corbyn's tweet). Someone told me that Corbyn mentioned the nationalisation of broadband. It doesn't sound right to me... I believe that broadband service providers are in healthy competition in the UK. Why nationalise? It sounds like going backwards...

Naomi comments on Nov 17, 2019:
Hello. I guess depending on how you see education services and healthcare service, the starting point of thinking process can vary. If you see that children are our future and it is our duty, as a nation, to educate them well (we will subsequently benefit from their abilities and skills, as teachers and doctors, for example), you will consider paying towards education services, including paying teachers well. Similarly, if you see that living a healthy life is a basic human right, and it is our duty, as a nation, to protect that right, you will consider paying towards healthcare services, including paying doctors well. Meanwhile, if you see students and patients as customers, education and healthcare services as products, and teachers an doctors (and the institutions they belong to) as providers, that'll be very much a free-market concept. In that case, teachers' and doctors' wages will be dependent on the profits made by the institutions, no?
A Man Was Set on Fire During Hong Kong Protests - YouTube
Naomi comments on Nov 17, 2019:
I am not pro-China, in terms of political status, hell no. But I cannot kid myself and use the Chinese totalitarian government as an excuse for overlooking such a criminal act committed by Hong Kong protesters. At the beginning of the video, it seems that the man in green had already been attacked by protesters; he was bleeding. Some insults were thrown at him and that's when he returned to the protesters to confront them. Whether or not you agree with the man, and he does not talk in the most respectful manner, he is still entitled to his opinion and he is free to express it - that is the very principle of free speech, no? Yet, the protesters (or at least one of them) silenced the man by setting him on fire. In that case, they don't understand the first thing about free speech. If anything, they're the ones who are behaving like totalitarians in my opinion. Hong Kong is definitely witnessing a breakdown of law and order. The Chinese government could have crushed the protests ages ago if they wanted to, but they haven't done so... It's odd... as if they're letting Hong Kong destroy itself...? I don't know. I've read or heard somewhere that Hong Kong isn't all that important to China.

Naomi comments on Nov 16, 2019:
Emotions like conceit and envy are usually regarded as bad things, and because I think so, too, when I recognise these bad emotions in myself, I manage not to let them surface. They are ugly things and I don't like the fact that I have them in me, but at the same time, I don't think I can eliminate them forever because I think it's human nature. Incidentally, according to Buddhism, there are as many as 108 defilements like envy and conceit. And if I tell you I never have these bad emotions, I will be lying. Anyway, my train of thought was: If we were all equal, we wouldn't have emotions like conceit and envy, in other words, we have these emotions because we are unequal in the first place. For example, you may feel envious if someone earns more than you, and you may feel defeated by the envy you have towards that person or you can change that envy to the driving force of motivation so that you will do better in your life. Conceit is a synonym of narcissism. Narcissistic people are competitive and motivated by their own achievements, and they will continue to strive to achieve further. I was wondering if what is originally regarded as a bad emotion can give a person motivation to do better, that may be because there is inequality in the first place, and it may be a law of nature in human society.
Do you feel better about yourself by comparing yourself with someone who is not doing as well as you...
Naomi comments on Nov 16, 2019:
Is it plausible that if we're all equal, we'll have no motivation to achieve anything? For example, we won't be able to measure or compare achievements because they're all equally good. There won't be any competition; there is no need to do better or worse because we are all at the same level. Isn't that kind of against human nature? Is inequality a law of nature?

Hello. Feminists who tell those four things are not real feminists; they're dishonest ideologues. For example, the notion that "gender is a social construct" is a cautionary observation made by an American philosopher/theorist Judith Butler. I find this video interesting. Regardless of what they are actually saying, including the viewpoint that Hong Kong protests are organised by outsiders (which I think is a reasonable point), if you're firmly against socialism, the fact that GG is a socialist and JB is a pro-China activist prevents you from processing your thoughts any further than discounting their views. Concentrating on what they are actually saying, I wonder if it would sound more credible and be perceived better if, say, Douglas Murray, said the same thing...

It was the most beautiful wedding I've ever been invited to. As always, thank you very much for sincerely responding to my question and letting me share your knowledge. There is a lot of information to explore. Much appreciated. What I don't appreciate very much is that some people hijack others' posts for creative-writing practice. It often happens on this site. On this occasion, I'm afraid that being unable to answer my question directly and therefore deciding to sarcastically negate its validity, let alone displaying a self-indulgent, pretentious piece of writing with little substantiation is not welcome. It is an arrogance that is evident. Incidentally, I take no pleasure in making such a critical observation. There is nothing wrong with using this site for writing practice, and in that case, one should make one's own posts for that purpose. Again, thanks ever so much for your help. I'm learning a lot!

Naomi comments on Nov 3, 2019:
Right now I'm thinking of horse racing... Both male and female riders compete in equestrian events. Jockeys are all petite. So, size and weight matter but not gender. Boxing... It comes with weight classes. Does that mean as long as a boxer's weight falls into the right weigh range, the boxer's gender can be irrelevant? Morality... How about physically hurting a trans man who may still somewhat look like a woman in boxing, wrestling, etc.? Any decent parents would bring up their boys not to hurt girls and that moral value is supported by most of us. Is there a way to cancel out all the physical and biological differences between male and female so that only skills and abilities can be focused on? In all sports? Or simply ban all trans people from participating in any sports competitions that closely concern gender differences...? There is a lot to think about. 😩😩😩

Capitalism Didn’t Make the iPhone, You iMbecile - YouTube

Hello. I guess capitalism doesn't always make products by itself, but always facilitates mass production and sales of products, no? When a product is invented, it is useless unless it is industrially applicable (it can be made and used) and marketable (profitable). An invention (including R&D) of product can be funded by the state and capitalism can help with mass production and marketing of that product. Hello. Diwali, Divali, Deepawali or Dipavali - not Dawali. Diwali is a HINDU festival, not an Islamic festival. It is a festival of lights to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. If those protesters (they look like Muslims) in the video are taking the advantage of this innocent Hindu custom for their political agenda, they couldn't be more wrong. Meanwhile, I find Katie Hopkins' narrative misleading by not clarifying that Diwali is a Hindu festival. I dare say it looks like she is also taking the advantage of this innocent Hindu custom for attacking radical Islamic movements. I see very little fairness coming from either side, I'm afraid...

Gone Viral When It Shouldn't Have - Identity of Gender-Questioning Child Exposed After Websites ...
Naomi comments on Oct 25, 2019:
I'm often oblivious to whether I'm thinking in the left mode or in the right mode. If you say Snopes is a left-leaning information source, so be it. The point I see is that Snopes points out the distortion of facts; in this case, what was originally the divorce case of the boy's parents and the custody of the boy, the gender transition issue surrounding the boy was cleverly incorporated by the media, thereby diverting the focus from the actual divorce case to the indoctrination of the boy (which is obviously child abuse). Snopes also points out a violation of the ethics of journalism by the media by reporting the story the way they did. For example, in the UK, the identity of a child subjected to child abuse must never be revealed for legal reasons. Is it the same in your country? For these reasons, I think it is wrong that the Texas case has been presented and gone viral the way it has, and that instantaneous, almost hysterical reactions to the story by thousands of people are not helping. In any event, I think that the boy is the true victim of the polarised world of grownups.

What is your view on euthanasia?
Naomi comments on Oct 24, 2019:
The term "assisted dying" is used in the UK. I think it is nuance-sensitive; it carefully avoids the implication of "suicide" and "euthanasia", i.e., the right to kill oneself or the right to kill someone. In my understanding, "assisted dying" is about the right to die, not the right to be killed. There are people who suffer incurable illnesses and diseases and therefore wish to die with dignity while they can. They no longer have quality of life and do not wish to be kept alive. Assisted dying is currently illegal in the UK, so they have to go to Switzerland to fulfill their wish. Here is an article about assisted dying, including information (video) about DIGNITAS which provides assisted dying. https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/assisted-dying-dignitas-law-change-19374391 Although it is a non-profit organisation, DiGNITAS charges a lot of money for its service. Maybe this is a preventative message saying "If you're put off by the amount we charge, maybe you haven't thought it through. Maybe, you're not serious enough about ending your life." You can also find documentaries about DIGNITAS on YouTube. Incidentally, I am also aware of arguments against assisted dying. http://www.bbc.co.uk/ethics/euthanasia/against/against_1.shtml As always, thanks ever so much for your inputs.

Naomi comments on Oct 21, 2019:
What I personally find a little odd/unnatural is the little girl's line "I don't want to eat animals, any more." When I was a child, I didn't like meat very much, so I used to say "I don't like meat." but I don't remember that I ever said "I don't want to eat animals". Plus, the little girl says "any more", implying that she used to eat meat but no longer. What changed her mind? Is there a tiny bit of virtual-signaling element in the ad? How about the setting? There is only a father and his little daughter who looks Asian, implying his ex is Asian, or the girl is adopted. Do you think the ad is normalising this kind of family structure - possibly being politically correct? Or if any TV ad shows a very traditional family, would that be also politically correct? I'm probably reading into it too much - just exercising my tiny brain. Lol

When we are behind masks, we pretend to be someone else we are not - brave, heroic, idealistic, romantic, loving, feisty, aggressive, silly, rude, etc., etc. we can be anyone (avatar) because it is all in the virtual world. If you encounter any comments you don't like, just ignore them and move on. If you don't like trolls (although I don't see any truly hostile individuals here), just block them, and they'll have nothing to do with you. I always tell myself that this is just a virtual world, don't mix it up with the real world, and funnily enough, I find the virtual world is a lot more manageable than the real world I live in. You're gonna be alright. All the best.
I’ve tried hard to respect the work of most contemporary orchestral composers.

Hello, I would consider the following points as well as the notion that a religion provides a basis of morality: *Morality is not just something that people learn, argues Yale psychologist Paul Bloom: It is something we are all born with. At birth, babies are endowed with compassion, with empathy, with the beginnings of a sense of fairness.* *As David Hume famously put it, we are slaves of the passions. Our moral judgments and moral actions are driven mostly by gut feelings—rational thought has little to do with it. I find this a grim view of human nature, but if it were true, we should buck up and learn to live with it.* https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-moral-life-of-babies/ Food for thought.
The 10 Commandments and Christian Morality [youtube.com]
Naomi comments on Oct 16, 2019:
Hello. The way Yaron ridicules the 10 commandments is funny. I believe that the commandments below are shared by most as basic moral values in the East; I don't think these moral values are specific to Christianity, or any religion for that matter. I think they're simply universal moral values. Respect your father and mother. You must not commit murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not give false evidence against your neighbour. You must not be envious of your neighbour's goods. You shall not be envious of his house nor his wife, nor anything that belongs to your neighbour.
Mao Tse Tung said, "power comes from the barrel of a gun."
Naomi comments on Oct 15, 2019:
Hello. Mao's full statement was: ‘Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun. Our principle is that the party commands the gun, and the gun must never be allowed to command the party.’ And he commanded the gun... against his own people...

Naomi comments on Oct 14, 2019:
Hello. The term "virtue-signaling" puts my mind straight into an arena of political polarisation (maybe it's only me who react this way), unless that is your intention. I would prefer your lovely song to be outside politics so that listeners can appreciate the lyrics from multiple perspectives. All the best. :)

Hello. It seems that we, humans, are the ones who often bring negative effects to nature by making "progress". Ironic. The number of bees has also been on decline in the UK.
Notice how the Nordic countries are leading the world in low carbon energy transitions
Naomi comments on Oct 12, 2019:
Wow! Thanks ever so much everyone for your inputs. You make me realise there are so many options/technologies to make clean energy. Many still require further R&D, plus they have to be industrially applicable and marketable, but there is always hope and room for improvement. Clean energy can only be a good thing. And I like positive thinking.

Hello. I find this a tricky one. As much as I hope for a positive outcome for Hong Kong, I have to ask myself if it is just to use a sports arena (theatre, concert hall, etc., for that matter) as a political platform. What do you think?

Hello. Without considering differences and similarities between countries, i.e., backgrounds including history, culture, social dynamic, geography, etc., I don't think it is possible for one country to just "copy" another country's systems and hope they will work.

Hello. I don't know who or what to believe anymore... It seems that climate change believers and deniers are both circulating data according to their preferences. For example, articles like this claim that NASA keeps altering its data: https://stevengoddard.wordpress.com/2014/06/23/noaanasa-dramatically-altered-us-temperatures-after-the-year-2000/ If I can't trust NASA, who else can I trust? :(
What are they doing...? Drugs?
Naomi comments on Oct 10, 2019:
It is often the case that some don't even know what they're protesting for or against. Also, there is always a risk that originally a peaceful protest for a genuine cause becomes hijacked by violent extremists and manipulators. These seem to be common problems when protests grow too big.

Hello. Talking of "beyond meat", I've been involved in translating specifications of inventions. Many fail to be recognised as inventions due to lack of novelty and inventiveness. It is amazing that how much time, money, thought and effort are put into creating something novel and industrially applicable.
