Naomi comments on Jun 4, 2019:
Proverbs 12:10 “Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast, but the mercy of the wicked is cruel.” My focus is on "common practice of euthanasia in healthy unwanted pets".I've been thinking about this, and I think it's wrong. (Similarly, I think "abortion of healthy unwanted fetus" is wrong.) I think euthanasia only treats symptoms and not the causes of the symptoms. The primary problem of overpopulation needs to be addressed and euthanasia should be the very last resort. In my opinion, to say that healthy pets have to be put down because no one wants them or because animal shelters are overcrowded is lazy rationalisation. Animal rights are defined, by WSAVA (the World Small Animal Veterinary Association), as rights to have their inherent worth respected and rights to life and liberty. We seem to constantly violate these rights and rationalise euthanasia. I think there are a few ways that could be tried to address the problem of overpopulation; if one animal shelter is overcrowded, another shelter could cover for it; they can build a network among themselves. Or, they can find volunteers who can provide foster homes. Perhaps, local authorities can run programs to vaccinate and neuter stray dogs to control diseases and population. Educating pet owners is also important.

What do you think about this innocently presented book?
Naomi comments on Jun 1, 2019:
I think that "slightly inappropriate" children's books such as this should exist purely for a laugh. If a child was young enough not to know the alternative meaning of beaver when the story was read to him or her, and grew old enough to finally realise its alternative meaning and therefore found hilarious, that would be a great way to appreciate such a sense of humour. (though I do realise that this kind of humour is not everyone's cup of tea). I hope that such books will never become politicised or used for any insidious purposes. Some people are worried, quite rightly, that such books may be used by paedophiles for example, but then it is surely our responsibility as adults to protect children from such individuals and not blaming the books, wouldn't you say? Thank you for visiting this post.

Reagan, according to the piece of information below, is responsible for establishing the association between Christianity and conservatism. Interesting. One of Jeremy Corbyn’s first duties after his re-election as leader of the Labour Party in September 2016 was an appearance at the Sunday morning service organised by Christians on the Left, at an evangelical Anglican church near the conference venue in Liverpool. The worshippers who had gathered that morning gave Corbyn a warm reception and vocal support as he described the “fundamental tenets of Christianity” as being “social justice”, “sharing” and “compassion”. If the idea of such a scene seems strange, it is probably because we more readily associate Christianity with conservatism and the political right. We are much more familiar with the Religious Right of the United States, a coalition of evangelical Christians and conservative Republicans which dates back to Ronald Reagan’s presidential campaign. Such is the bond forged between these two groups that every Republican presidential candidate since Reagan has gained the support of a majority of white evangelicals. Yet this link serves to obscure a long and genuine tradition of left-wing Christianity, one which cuts across national and denominational boundaries, from the Roman Catholic liberation theology of Latin America, to the “red-letter” evangelicalism of the United States, to the Christian Socialism of the UK.

It's not that I've ever had an abortion myself, but having a baby, including conceiving, pregnancy, giving birth and, even abortion under unfortunate circumstances, is a very private matter to me. Why would I want the entire world to know about my private life...? Whether pro-life or pro-abortion, imposing one's morality on the other is questionable, I think. In the case of total ban on abortion, I would imagine that some women take the risk and have illegal abortions secretly...

Do you think there should be a place for "silence" within "freedom of speech"?
Naomi comments on May 25, 2019:
I posted this comment elsewhere, but still... I think that freedom of silence is a concept which is less well understood than freedom of speech."The right to remain silent" (legal protection of silence) is very familiar to us, but I would like to make a distinction between "the right to remain silence" and "freedom of silence". Although my question does not necessarily pertain to the legal aspect of it, here is an example of how "freedom of silence" is legally protected in India, in a very different way from "the right to remain silent". The contributor of the example says: I am going to give one of the best examples of Freedom of Silence in India. The judgement regarding the case (to be discussed later) is considered as one of the most important judgement given by Supreme Court of India ever. Freedom of Speech- Constitution of India. Freedom of speech is one of the six fundamental rights conferred to the citizens of India under Part III of the Constitution. It is one of the most important aspects in the hierarchy of personal liberties provided under Article 19 to Article 22 of the Indian Constitution. But this right is subject to limitations imposed under Article 19(2).Freedom of speech also includes the right to silence. The Constitution of India guarantees every person right against self incrimination under Article 20 (3): "No person accused of any offence shall be compelled to be a witness against himself". ... It is not clear if the accused can exercise his right to silence during interrogation by public servants. Freedom of Silence- National Anthem case. In this case, three children belonging to Jehovah’s witnesses were expelled from the school for refusing to sing the national anthem, although they stood respectfully when the same was being sung. They challenged the validity of their expulsion before the Kerala High Court which upheld the expulsion as valid and on the ground that it was their fundamental duty to sing the national anthem. On appeal, the Supreme Court held that the students did not commit any offence under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. Also, there was no law under which their fundamental right under Article 19(1)(a ) could be curtailed. Accordingly, it was held that the children’s expulsion from the school was a violation of their fundamental right under Article 19(1)(a ), which also includes the freedom of silence. Again, I think that "freedom of silence" is a concept which is less well understood than "freedom of speech".

Hello. I must admit that I don't like the use of emotive words like "kill", "murder", etc. Emotive words are not helpful when trying to have a discussion in a calm, civil manner. Anyway, it was a long time ago, but I watched a documentary in which a lady was carrying a fetus with a severely underdeveloped heart. The doctor who examined the fetus concluded that there was 0 chance of survival outside the womb. Against the doctor's advice, i.e., an early-stage abortion, the lady decided to keep the fetus. When the baby was born, barely alive, the doctor of course had a duty to save its life. A rather aggressive procedure was carried out on the baby, all in vain. A couple of hours later, the baby died. I shed a few tears. I was sad and angry at the same time. I thought it was very cruel to the baby; it was allowed to be born and kept alive only to have so much pain and suffering before it died. I thought the lady made a terrible choice to keep the fetus. Do you think I was wrong to think that?

Socialism/communism Works ?
Naomi comments on May 2, 2019:
Hello. I understand that communism is a form of socialism and socialism is not exactly the same as communism, but many people use these words interchangeably, which I think is too simplistic. I also think you're right about possible fear-mongering about socialism/communism - could it be propagandic..? The Nordic countries are socialistic countries; they have big governments but they do not interfere with individual liberty. These countries also very much support free market so there is a big capitalistic element to how these countries are run by their socialistic governments. However, like you point out, there needs to be a certain level of homogeneity, and a demographic factor, i.e. the balance between the population of tax payers and the population of the to-be-provided-for. I gather that because mainly of rapid influxes of migrants and refugees, the Nordic socialistic model is beginning to collapse...Thank you for sharing your thought.

Peterson has said, "I act as if God exists." What does this mean to you?
Naomi comments on Apr 25, 2019:
Hello. I kind of go along with Peterson's view on the meaning of life. It is a Western-centric view based on the Christian principle - quite understandably. One's perspective of life could be quite different if it is based on a different religious principle, a polytheistic religion, say Hinduism or Shintoism, for example, i.e., the belief in multiple gods, with a different set of values. I grew up in a secular environment, so I don't have a strong attachment to any particular religion. But, when I am to make a big decision or make a big change in my life, if I feel as if my late father is watching over me or protecting me, in a spiritual sense, that is perhaps a similar sentiment to "I act as if God exists". And at this basic level, I believe everybody feels this way now and then. Sorry, I'm just rambling here. lol

Cows and sheep eat lots of grass. So, as far as I'm concerned, beef and lamb are a good source of leafy vegetables, which makes me a vegan.

Where are the Marxists Here? (Zizek vs. Peterson)
Naomi comments on Apr 20, 2019:
I find it interesting that while Karl Marx and Marxism are usually demonized by many instantly (including JP), the Zizek's understanding of both is different. I'm under the impression that Zizek's knowledge of Karl Marx and Marxism is even more extensive than Peterson's.

My ex-Muslim friend just published this article in Medium.
Naomi comments on Apr 19, 2019:
Hello. Thank you very much for sharing this article. I am always reluctant to talk of Muslims as collective. The media never make a clear distinction between Mecca Muslims (moderate Muslims) and Medina Muslims (radical/extreme Muslims), nor do they clarify the difference between Islam and Islamism. Similarly, the distinction between Hinduism and Hindutva is constantly blurred. I am sick of it, and I sometimes wish people would go beyond the generalisation of Islam and Muslims and pay more attention to voices of individual Muslims (or any group of people for that matter). I am very aware that there are some brave individuals and groups (Mecca Muslims and ex-Muslims and their supporters) working hard on the reform and modernisation of Islam, including the removal of Hadith and modification of Sunnah, and I know they're constantly under death threats made by Medina Muslims. I sincerely hope that they will succeed in the near future, so that Mecca Muslims could integrate better.
Two religions can coexist. Syncretic culture is possible. [youtube.com]
Naomi comments on Apr 19, 2019:
Hello, everyone. I should have explained that: Hindutva Farah Naqvi talks of in the video is an extreme political ideology which is inspired by Nazi ideology, and Islamism is also an extreme political ideology. Therefore, there is a huge conflict between Hindutva and Islamism in India. It is powerful when Naqvi says "God Allar (Muslim god), please give my brother a son like Lord Krishua (Hindu god)." Then she continues to explain how Hindu and Muslim cultures are fused together through everyday life. So she is actually criticising both politically-motivated ideologies and how ideologues are dividing ordinary Muslims and Hindus in India.

Naomi comments on Apr 18, 2019:
Hello. I realise that different people have different definitions of free speech. If the definition of free speech is simply "say whatever you like, including cursing and name-calling", then I can't go along with that because courtesy matters to me. If anyone has a valid argument and manages to get it across in a decent manner, I don't care if that comes from left, right or centre. Besides, what I don't know is often in different/opposite opinions from mine, so, based on that, I will welcome left-leaning views as well as right-leaning views. (Actually, I don't like this polarised left-right concept at all.)
